In rock and metal, it's the people who aren't really into the music as much as they are the look and stereotype. In metal forums and places like that, you'll see phrases like "mallcore" or "nu-metal" used derogatorily (though nu-metal in itself isn't an insult, just another style of music, somewhere between alternative, rock, and metal, I guess), especially "mallcore," meaning bands like Korn and Slipknot, and all the "goth kids" who buy up everything in stores like Hot Topic in the mall, so they look cool. At the same time, though, you've got metal "elitists" who can get a bit high and mighty and have a "metaller than thou" attitude (lol) and can be real jerks about the whole thing. It's all kind of pointless when people argue about things like that though, as every single bit of this is just conjecture and no matter who you talk to, in the end, at least some great percentage of it is BS (even this post, lol).
