i suffered with depression for many years before i stumbled upon a website about it. I filled in a questionnaire about my symptons and it gave me a list of techniques to use for 7 days mainly about staying aware of my automatic thoughts. i havent suffered with depression since. most depressives have automatic negative thoughts which then lead them into more negativity bringing them down further. The trick was to be aware of these thoughts and respond to them. The most important one is when the automatic thought is 'why am i thinking so much, i shouldnt be thinking like this' which is purely just a thought. Respond by telling yourself 'no, i'm not thinking too much, its just an automatic thought' and eventually thoughts like this will fade away.

this sounds like good advice, I have been suffering depression for awhile now and I am trying to get through it on my own even I know maybe I should go talk to someone about it but I am not one to talk about my personal things, I might think about this more.

its good to talk to somebody about your problems, bottling them up inside can just make them stronger and although you seem to ignore or forget them they do build up frustration without you even realising. its good to get things off your chest and get reassurance.

I slso suffered from depression for a long time.Recently,I find a way to get over it.The way is to immerse yourself into the negative emotion for a minute.when you find yourself in the middle of a very stressful time,or you feel angry or frustrated, stop.Whateever you are doing ,stop and sit for one minute. While you are sitting there, completely immerse yourself in the negative emotion.I try this method,it work!Maybe it is a good way to get rid of depression!

this is a good technique, it's all about the way you represent the world to yourself. To look further into this kind of technique and other psychological ways of coping with depression I suggest looking into fields such as nlp (neuro-linguistic programming), hypnosis and cognitive behavioural therapy or even psychotherapy. I have made some fascinating discoveries by delving into these fields.

try looking at websites that link depression and bi-polar disorder, I'm sure it was one of those. Another good website to look at for this kind of information is www.nlpweekly.com

since there are a lot of people on here suffering with depression I will suggest a few useful techniques that have helped me. The 1st one is from NLP and is called the swish pattern. Take the image of your depressed self in your mind and picture it like its on a cinema screen, large and colourful and well defined. Now, as you look at that picture make it blurry and unclear and then make it black and white. Now, zoom out on the picture until it becomes really small so you are left with a small blurry black and white image of your depressed self. Now, without zooming back in repeat the process 4 or 5 times and see how you react emotionally. Do this a couple of times a day for a week or so and see how things work out.
Another trick is the knowledge that words (communication) create thoughts and thoughts create emotions. When something triggers an emotional response that makes u feel down, remember and tell urself that its just a bad thought, nothing more, rendered from the words or communication and u wont let it bother u because its just a response to communication.
Another technique is to eliminate automatic negative thoughts by being aware of them and reminding yourself that its just another automatic thought which you're not going to respond to. A good example of this is that when these thoughts tend to occur depressives often think 'why I am thinking so much?'. Tell yourself 'I'm not thinking too much, its just my interior dialogue throwing automatic thoughts at me, dont worry about it, it'll go away'.
Hypnosis could be another useful idea if u can master it, find a quiet time and create a wonderful unique place in ur mind that contains all the things that make u feel happy. Whenever u feel down, take 10 minutes of time-out to relax all ur muscles, close ur eyes and drift off to this place until u feel better.
For these techniques to be useful u have to use them regularly for at least a few weeks, but dont overdo it. They might seem a little complicated but it all comes down to how u represent a model of the world to ur own mind. Hope this helps u all

i was prescribed fluoxetine for a while but they made me feel confused and frustrated, though i didn't have any of the severe symptons antidepressants are known for. The way I see it is that there are always reasons at the root of depression and takin tablets does not take any of those problems away. It might make you able to cope with them better but then you end up with an addiction which is another problem in itself. Its also good to learn to eliminate automatic negative thoughts by responding to them by telling yourself its just an automatic negative thought.
