I'm actually starting to believe people are "dog racist"!!!

Last night I sat outside and passed candy out to the kids that came to the door. I had my Golden Retriver outisde with me (she doesn't need a leash when she comes out), and people loved her! All the kids and parents would come up and pet her. I heard my other dog (Maggie) barking inside so I got her on a leash and brought her out with me. She is a german shepherd rottweiler mix (mostly black with some tan and white-like a rottweiler).
Suddenly, after bringing her out, a ton of people were passing by my house (I was sitting on my porch, light on, big bowl of candy in my lap). Some people would stop, and then keep walking after seeing my dog. A few people did still come to get candy, but just the kids, no parents. And when the kids pet my other dog they patted her head real fast and then left. But with my golden they crouched down and pet her and rubbed her stomach!
Then, after a bit Maggie wanted back in. So I let her in and after she was gone...people stopped skipping my house, and continued to happily approach my golden!
Why are people so intimidated by black dogs?? She isn't even that big! She's not even one yet!

Yes people are sterotyped when it comes to dogs but you know, it's not really their fault because it's the one's who've trained their dogs to be mean and vicious in which has given the dog breed a bad name. I thought Rotts were mean dogs till one day a coworker of mine (years ago) brought his in and I found her to be so sweet and friendly as she could be! I changed my perception right then and there and realized that it's not the dog but the a$$' that train them. It's really sad because dogs want to please their owners and they try their best to do what ever it is the owner wants them to be and it doesn't always fit with the rest of us.

OH yeah, def. I hate people who train their dogs to be mean and crap like that. I work around dogs ( as a nighttime pet care specialist at a pets hotel) and so far we have had...I'd say 3 or 4 rottweilers stay with us. They were all the SWEETEST things! We also had I think 3 dobermans, tons of german shepherds, and even one VERY LAREG pitbull mix. All were the sweetest dogs! I even taught one of the dobermans a trick ;P And the big pit mix...well, he liked to lay in my lap! lol. He was DEF. not the size of a lap dog X.X

Its not just black dogs.
I have 2 wolfdogs , you can see their pics on my profile. You can guess the prejudices against them. Both are sweet as can be , heck Voden will even try to break up a fight. They just haven't taken the time to learn anything about them or to get to know the animal & thus are scared by them.

You said the dog looks like a Rottweiler. My guess would be that this is why they did not stop. Not out of racism, but fear. I would not have stopped either. I don't care how much you tried to convince me too. These dogs are known for being vicious.

Well, she doesn't look like a rottweiler. Her body and face look more like a labs. She is thin and not really big right now (although a good size for her age). She is mostly black, and where rottys usually have tan coloring, she is white. But she doesn't really look like a rotty.

I have noticed the same thing. I volunteer for a Retriever Rescue group, and no one has second thoughts about coming right up to the dogs and petting them. If we are near the Greyhounds, though, and there are black ones in the group people will approach cautiously. I could not imagine the Greyhounds ever having one bit of "mean" in them, but people just don't approach them as easily. Black dogs are always harder to adopt out from any rescue or shelter, too, no matter the breed. I just don't know why.

People were scared of GREYHOUNDS??? I can't believe that! lol. We had 2 that came in where I worked, and they were the BEST DOGS! So awesome! I'm waiting for the day when they come back! ;P
My plan when I rescue my first dog after moving out is to get a black pitbull...I know that shelters always have a hard time adopting out pitbulls, so that will most likely be the breed I look for. And if there is a black one that needs a home, I'll get that one! :)

Yes, people were afraid of Greyhounds, just because they were black. Having volunteered for rescue groups for a few years, I think I've just about seen it all now. Black dogs are always the toughest to place. I think that's great that you are going to adopt a black pit. Every dog deserves a fair chance at life.

Oh, thats great you volunteer! I would if I had the time. But i'm just shocked that it seems no matter what breed, if a dog is black it is harder to find homes for, even LABS!
My whole plan about adopting a dog is getting a dog I like, and getting the ugliest one I can find in the whole shelter lol. Or asking to see dogs that are due to get euthanized soon. Those will probably be my priority!

I think a lot of fear of dogs is media bred. It seems like only a few days or weeks pass before a report of a dog attacking a child appears in one form or another. When the media get hold of a story with dogs it is always taken (or usually) the dog was a savage dog etc. Whilst this is sometimes the case it does nothing to educate people how to act or should I say not act around dogs and indeed any potentially dangerous animal. We also have films and TV where large black dogs are seldom friendly, consequently people react rightly or wrongly to animals on the basis of prejudice.

I def. understand and agree with what you are saying. It seems more bad stories about dogs get out than the good ones. Of course, "bad news sells better." Which is crap to me ;P I prefer the good news.

I think people like good looking and cute dogs. My older dog is very friendly and better looking that my younger dog, so she is getting more attention. She is black. My younger is white, but heavier and shy.
I think it is all about dog’s personality....

Maggie is a very good looking dog, and all she was doing when people would pass by was sitting next to me. My golden retriver was laying down, lol. Both very calm dogs =P *Maggie looks a lot like Mocha, in my profile pictures*

I know how you feel. I have a miniature schnauzer, and people try to avoid him like he's bad or something. My dog is a little saint, not to mention he's too lazy to attack or bite anyone. My dog loves to get attention and to have people pet him, but sometimes people don't pay him any attention. I'm not sure if dogs understand rejection, but I'm sure that breaks my little dogs heart when someone ignores him.

Oh, I def. understand hwo a dog can be hurt by lack of attention. My Golden Retriever LOVES attention, especially from kids. So when someone passes with petting her she gets disappointed! lol.
I can't believe people are even scared of small breeds. Sure, they can still bite...but if they did it is much easier to fight off a small dog attack!

I've noticed that, too. Not so much with the dogs I have now, though people do automatically want to pet the little one and ignore the bigger one (they are both black). But that could also be chalked up to personality. My little dog doesn't meet a stranger she doesn't want to be friends with. It doesn't matter if it's a person, dog, or cat. She thinks they are all her friends. She weighs 17-18 lbs, and has walked up to a 120 lb Husky mix! That poor Husky didn't know what to think. lol They actually did become friends but I was ready to kill my husband for letting my dog that close to that one.
Anyway, back to your discussion. :) My best friend had a dachshund and pointer when we were younger. The pointer had the much better personality, but people were always afraid of her, too. They wanted to pet the dachshund, even though she would growl at them, and they would ignore the pointer, even if she was wagging her tail trying to get attention.

lol your puppy sounds very adventurous! And cute! =P Puppies like that are always adorable in my mind!
Oh, I have no doubt a Pointer has a good personality! Those dogs are great! I would never be scared of a dog that didn't deserve the fear. I may actually be TOO trusting sometimes...but I just love dogs! lol.

I haven't seen many people being racists in dogs but I have seen many people racists about people. I don't know what such people think about people of different nations. All are humans with only skin of different color and shade and language different but they still are humans.

I don't think people are so much intimidated by her color as they are her breed. There were several savage dog attacks in our area during the past five years by Rottweilers. And, now everyone around here seems to hate them. It's sad how one bad dog can make them all seem that way.
When I was a kid, we had a mixed breed German Shepherd dog and he was just incredible. He never bit us or made us feel like he would attack. Some dogs are good. And, some dogs are bad. Most people just assume that Rottweillers are bad. They have received lots of negative press on television lately. And, most people are too eager to believe it. Sorry to hear that your Halloween experience were ruined by a few ignorant people that cannot look past the hype.
As for those people that dared to risk being near your dog for a handful of candy, only to scurry away quickly, I have one thing to say. Most dogs can out run a human being, especially a child. If the dog were really dangerous and prone to violence, their running would only encourage the dog to attack. Like I said, those people were just ignorant of the facts.

Well, I understand sometimes how people will lose a trust in dogs after being attacked, but even people who aren't act weird around black dogs. I don't know why! I love them! But I def. get why someone with a bad history would prefer not to be around them.

i have to highly disagree on this post...i don't know what others have posted and haven't read though many of them yet but i have a rotweiler/blue healer male dog and he is friggin huge...you would expect everyone would be scared stiff of him...nope.....if they know me....they think he is a "cute little guy" and always wanna play with him....he is pure black....so i have to say it can't be just the "color" of the dog because mine is black and everyone I know loves the heck outa him lol. Now if he doesn't know you and you don't know him...well now thats yet another story lol...he isn't mean but you don't know that and are probably gonna be scared outa your mind when you see him lol. Anyways, my two cents.
Peace Out

I think that's great that people aren't scared of your dog! I wish people everywhere felt the same way. But there was no reason for people to ignore Maggie.
There are sites and articles on how black dogs are harder for shelters to adopt out. They say that the blacl dogs "appear more vicious and dangerous." Which I think is total crap.

It's not black dogs they are scared of, but if it were it would prolly go back to all of that huge load of horse crap about black being wicked, evil, of the devil, satanic, etc etc..
It's most likely because she looks similar to a Rottie (my Rott I used to have was named Maggie also!!)
It's that fear just like with pits & dobes, that mentality of "OMG they are attack dogs, they might kill me!"
Simple as that. It's very sad but very true. :-/

i've never heard of a dog racist before. i am inclined to think that i am one because i dont like ugly looking dogs. LOL oh, but i surely am not because the breed doesn't matter to me. ^__^ as long as the dog looks cute to me i will like it. i'm also impressed with black huge dogs because of their shiny black hair/skin. ^__^
i guess they are afraid of maggie. or maybe she isn't that friendly like your golden retriever. or maybe those people aren't really a fan of rottweilers. ^__^;;
