My Dog and My Son

I own a 5 year old medium mixed breed male dog whom we bought at an Atwoods for $25 when he was a puppy. He has always, from the start been very attached to my youngest son-who is actually his "Daddy". Even tho he is our family pet, he is VERY protective over Aaron, who is 15 years old. When I try to wake up Aaron in the mornings for school, Shadow stands guard over him and tried to defend him. I cant even pull the blankies off of him without him trying to nip at me or rush me. Its gotten to the point that I have to hold my hands behind my back to keep from getting bit. Shadow is a wonderful dog, but this is the part that really bothers me. Any vets out there to help with this one???
