surviving on social security income / checks

do any of you out there really believe that folks can survive living on thier social security income checks ? i do not as i think they do not correctly reflect what a person must spend on a monthly basis, many have mediacal bills that go beyond hundreds of dollars a month, put in food costs, occasion clothing replacement etc i can not see it, anyway any feed back appreciated thanks in advance
