Our dog Cuddles will be 8 in Dec and she hasn't cost us a lot in vet bills! In aug 2007 a tumor was found on her leg but we couldn't pay the $1000. for surgery and we also didn't have pet insurance! We found a place that will take payments so surgery will happen on Nov.07 2007. Cuddles will lose her right rear leg and hip! The tumor got into her bone sometime after her first diagnosis. The Bluecross animal hospital told us she should have the surgery right then in aug but they wanted the full $1000. We weren't prepared for this then, but we will have pet insurance which is $40. a month. Please think about pet insurance because pets are people too! :) Take care.

oh, I am so sorry to hear that Cuddles has to have such surgery. I saw the picture you have of her and yes, I can notice the "lump" there. but otherwise she seems to look fine. Amazing how pet can endure illness and not complain..not like us humans! That is precisely why years and years ago, in the 1970s why I had to put one of my kitties down. He had a "problem" with his front leg and either he could have had surgery and have his leg amputated but also needing "therapy" to get him used to being with only three legs, and would have cost us thousands or put down. The cost was phenomenal like I said..we just couldn't afford it and back then there WAS NO such thing as pet insurance then, so the dismal decision. We had him put down. Yes pet insurance is important, but is expensive. I wouldn't be able to afford it even now. I just hope and pray nothing happens to my two kitties..as much as would love insurance a total of $80 a month (for both cats) is out of question.

I was just checking Maybebabys response about what ailments are covered and it isn't a lot! I'm disappointed and probably will opt out unless better coverage is found!
I'm sure we could find better and cheaper coverage, but i think some money in the bank is going to be our choice!
Cuddles is eating now and more mobile since she's been put on pain meds! Thanks for the reply and take care Pyewacket.

My goodness --to say that's unfair is an understatement. I would think if one is willing to pay so much for pet insurance that all health problems would be covered.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear about your dog, losing his leg. That's very sad. But, at least, he'll be able to learn to walk on 3 legs, most likely. I'd love to have pet insurance, but can you imagine the cost, for all mine? I hope all goes well with your dog, and he lives a very long life. Take care, Bud. Have a really good weekend.

Thank you for the support Brenda and we hope Cuddles can be with us for some more happy years! Whatever the outcome, it's worth it all! We will put off the pet insurance until the more common ailments are covered, at a reasonable cost at least! Take care Brenda, have a good one!

I once looked into getting pet insurance for my dogs and it wasn't worth it. The insurace does not cover any condition that maybe commom to the breed of your pet. For me that excluded everything that one of my dogs has gotten since that time. I would have been paying out insurance money only to not be covered now. Seeing as both my dogs are indoor dogs with a very low risk of being injured, the insurance just didn't make sense for us.

I am so glad to read your response! My eyes have been opened to what ailments are covered with pet insurance. Yes, the most common ailments aren't covered in Cuddles policy so i think it will be cash only! Hopefully something better will come along so our pets health problems are more affordable to treat! Thank you for the eye opener Maybebaby and take care. Hope you have many good years with your pets! :)

I agree! My husband and I are looking into it we have a dog(Black lab/whippet mix) and a cat, both a big part of our family. My mother used pet insurance for her afghan and believes it helped extend her life at least 3 years. Different areas of the country charge a little more, but we are finding some companies do give a multi-pet discount.

Thanks to Maybebabys reply we are rethinking about pet insurance! The most common health issues are not covered by insurance, at least not in our policy! I think we jumped into pet insurance too soon, feeling some guilt i suppose! Thank you and take care Ersmommy1.
