how do you choose your best response?

I seem to notice that some responses marked as best response aren't the best at all. Of course i know that it's really subjective but when you read the discussions there are a lot more better ideas than the ones choosen as best response. Can you please share what's your criteria in choosing? how many responses should you wait before choosing? Does the poster of such remark given extra credit for it?

I usually wait for four months and then read all the answers and mark the Best Response. I do not see whether they are in my friends' list or not. If the Response deserves Best title, I will give it.
