Sleeping - I want to sleep this well! lol

I have to take sleeping pills to help me sleep, because I sleep during the day (work night shifts) and my house can get pretty noisy when everyone starts getting home from school/work. My question is...how long is it suppose to be until the pill starts to kick in and make me tired and sleep? I always take my pills early so I can get to sleep when I want to, but they never seem to help me very quickly! Anyone else have the same problem?

I agree with Boofy, you must take the pills and then go lay down, even if you watch tv but staying active until they kick in sometimes takes them longer to work because sub-consciously you are actually fighting them without knowing it. I've taken them and they've worked within 30 minutes and sometimes I've taken them and they haven't worked at all or like 3 hours later and what's the point then...it makes me even groggier. Friends have told me that if you feel the tiredness coming in and are in the middle of something (in essence trying to fight it off for a few minutes or so) it will have the reverse effect on you. I don't take them everyday either but I'm assuming they can become habit forming and/or do some damage on your insides.

Yeah I usually don't go lay down right after taking them. I know I should. But I usually take them around 6am, and I can't go to sleep until 8:30-9am. And I mean a actually CAN NOT lol. People are in my current "sleeping area" until that time. Currently I have to sleep on the couch during the day, to stop my dog from chewing big holes in it! X.X lol. Thanks!

When I was in hospital, I think it took about twenty minutes before I was asleep. But I found that I had nightmares. You might have to get a different brand, and maybe drink some hot milk to help you sleep. I stopped taking sleeping pills, and would rather stay awake at night because of the horrible nightmares I got, they were very frightening.

That is terrible that the sleeping pills gave you nightmares! Luckily, that doesn't happen with me. My dreams are always weird anyways, so there's no difference. hehe. I could never drink warm milk, I am VERY picky when it comes to what I consume, and I know I would just gate the taste of warm milk! The only drink I like hot is tea, I need all the rest cold! It actually worked pretty fast for me today, but usually it takes a couple of hours to start working, so I take it about 6 AM.

not getting enough sleep is never good for us. for a pill to work, it generally takes about a half an hour to an hour to be absorbed into your system. have you tried melatonin?

I take them when I can't sleep if I am stressed or whatever, and they usually take about 2 hours to kick in. I will take them when we eat dinner so I am ready for bed once my kids go to sleep.

Do you ever think about getting rid of the sleeping pills? After all, they are medicines and I think it's better not to depend on the medicines for a long time. You can try to drink warm milk before sleep. And perhaps it will help you fall asleep soon.

Well I know drinking warm milk wouldn't help me. I have such a hard time falling asleep, I need the help. But I don't take pills everyday. On the days where I don't have to go to work that night I don't take the pills. Only when I have to be up by a certain time.

Hello yes i know about this ..... they call them sleeping pills... but what they are actually is a relaxant..... and once again it depents on what strengh you are taking....anyhow , take your pill go to bed and COMPLETELY RELAX. You will find they work after a few minutes and will give you about 4 hrs sleep you may wake up a bit "groggy" but thats ok, for the sleeping pill to work you have to help it. the main thing for you is to relax and darken your room

Well, I am one of those people who can't relax when I try to fall asleep. My mind is racing and just won't stop thinking! But the sleeping pill actually started working a couple hours after I took it. I could barely walk when I got to my room lol. I fell right asleep! I don't even remember trying to!

Hello LilyoftheThorns,Thanks for your post and please try to avoid anysort of sleeping pills even ifyou are not taking those regularly those have terrible sideeffects and the bad symptoms will comeup in future years ranging from neuro to gyno related diseases.Buy an Ocean CD, put in the sound earplugs inside your ears increase the volume of your cd as much you cant hear any other external noises, close your eyes and feel the sounds, its just great you will not know yourself when you go deep inside your sleep, try this and prove me if am wrong lol.
