How to give a cat a pill

November 2, 2007 2:29pm CST
Found this on my message board and thought it was hilarious all cat owners will symapthise. 1. Pick up cat and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow. 2. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process. 3. Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away. 4. Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm, holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten. 5. Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden. 6. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously. 7. Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later. 8. Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw. 9. Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink 1 beer to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap. 10. Retrieve cat from neighbor's shed. Get another pill. Open another beer. Place cat in cupboard, and close door on to neck, to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band. 11. Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Drink beer. Fetch bottle of scotch. Pour shot, drink. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus shot. Apply whiskey compress to cheek to disinfect. Toss back another shot. Throw Tee shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom. 12. Call fire department to retrieve the damn cat from across the road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil wrap. 13. Tie the little b*****d's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy-duty pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of filet steak. Be rough about it. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash pill down. 14. Consume remainder of scotch. Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table. 15. Arrange for SPCA to collect mutant cat from hell and call local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters. How To Give A Dog A Pill 1. Wrap it in bacon. 2. Toss it in the air.

LOL! That is really funny! I used to have lots of cats at one time and I know how difficult it is to give any medication to a cat. He will fight you as if his life is depending on it. Thanks for sharing!

LOL. It is so true though. When ours needed pills, we crushed them up and stuffed them into cat treats, wrapped these in cream cheese and rolled in anchovies. They got wise to that! lol.

My cats seem to know straight away if there's a pill in what I've given then and just leave the bit with the pill in.

then you need to arm yourself with a special pill plunger and a cat straight jacket. no kidding, they make straight jackets for cats just for the purpose of giving them a pill! lol.

Charlie Giving The Middle Claw - Charlie Will Drink From The Faucet
I am way too afraid of what Charlie's reaction would be if I went past step 9. Enlarge the attached picture and you can see how angry he got when I suggested he not drink from the kitchen faucet as it offended some humans that come into my apartment. How many times have you been given the middle claw?!?

Charlie's Cup Of Water - This is really true
I read your comment on the picture Nancyrowina and no, he doesn't turn the tap on himself, see the next pic and you will see the true reason he was cranky. I had forgotten to give him his own cup of water.~Donna

Heheheheheeeeeee, Nancy, you made me laugh out loud in the office, i am even falling off my seat....I have a two month old cat i rescued and if this is the kind of struggle am going to face i think i am going to chase it away. Lets just hope it does not get ill. The only option I think is to give its medicine in its food. Gosh! I know prefer a dog. Thanks for sharing the good laugh for dog owners and sympathy for cat owners.

And Rubbing the throat helps too apparently I'd heard it worked with dogs but not cats, you learn something new every day.

So funny! Im an expert in giving a pill to a cat or dog. I use to work for a veternary years ago. All you do is of course hold their mouth open and try and put the pill all the way in the back of their mouth without choking them.LOL Then hold their mouth shout for about 5 to 10 minutes. And constantly rubbing their neck. They have no choice but to swallow the pill. And thats it. Also you have to be very quick at this no time for them to even think about it.LOL Have a good day!

I don’t give the pill to the cat just like the way I give it to my kid. I would like to grind the pill into powder and mix it with its favorite food a small fraction at a time. By doing this the cat will never realize that it is taking the medicine all the time. In the same time I would mix some of the powdered medicine with the milk for the cat. If the cat has no appetite at all, I then would try some of your recommended ways. Thanks for sharing the interesting and valuable information.

Yes grinding it up and mixing it with food is an option, I must point out some of these steps are a joke and it shouldn't get that bad. lol

treats for me?! - Murgatroyd, the cat that will eat anything...
Haha, jokes like that make me thankful that my cat is so easy. He will pretty much eat anything if I present it the right way (meaning usually mixed with food). I usually make him do a trick first, so that he will think I am giving him a treat, and he will eat it before he realizes it is not. About the time he gets that funny "that tastes strange" look on his face, I'll give hime a real treat and he forgets all about it.

Good strategy, mine avoid the pill if mixed with food though they just seem to know.

LO, LOL, LOL! That´s really a nice idea! But I like cats too much to fallow that idea. One just has to be carefull, because after all that drink you can try to guive the pill to something else but the cat! I think the best way, like pointed out, is to smash the pill into litle pieces, and mix them with the food. Cherrs. Martosi.

I agree and try mixing it with the food or ask for a liquid medicine that can be put in the food easily.

have u tried crushing the pill and put in it in a can of tuna. mix it up. The cat will eat with no problem. I think if u will do that it will make it easier for the cat to digest the pill. u wont have a big mess on your hands.

that is hilarious. My parents had to give a dosage of antibiotics to their cat as she had an infection that was causing fluid in her paws. They had to give her antibiotics for 3 months. THey would wrap her in a towel, hold her down, and force it. They both had to be there to give her the medicine. It is just now over and she is back to good health but boy that was a hard one.

Thankfully I've never ha to give my cats medication for anything serious, I'd always opt for drops to put in the food if possible.

Very good and so true! I've had first hand experience and got the scratches to prove it. Even crushing them into the cat food never worked for me - my cats always knew there was something "wrong" with it. There's no doubt in that situation a dog is a whole lot easier to deal with - there again dogs are easier in most situations lol.

Thank you so much, that had me in hysterics! Being a cat owner myself I fully appreciate the nightmare and dread of giving my beloved cat a pill and she is a right madam, there is no fooling her. Excellent will try some of those out next time the vet gives me a dreaded tablet, he ain't daft he knows what she's like and remembers with lament the last time he tried!
