Did you know that the government has no constitutional right to protect you from harm? That is what happened in June of 1999 to Jessica Gonzales who filed a report for violation of a restraining order when her estranged husband abducted her 3 children and refused to return them. The husband, Simon Gonzales, had limited visitation rights with the children. After responding to her call and observing the home, the Castle Rock police department deamed he was arguably in his right to see the children. Despite repeated pleas from Jessica, the Castle Rock police department refused to enforce her court order. Early the next morning, Simon committed suicide by cop by driving his pick up to the police department and firing repeated shots into the station. After the gunfire ceased, the police found the murdered bodies of Leslie 7, Katherine 9, and Rebecca 10 in Simon's pickup truck. Jessica sued the police department for violation of her 14th amendment Right to Due Process and lost. The court cited that it is not the states responsibility to protect anyone from being harmed or murdered by another individual or madman. Jessica did win her $30million lawsuit in appeals but the original court ruling is enough to make any person cringe in fear.
Washington D.C. experiences the highest per capita murder rate in the U.S. makes it illegal to buy possess or carry fire arms. While in Switzerland, a country who makes it manditory to possess 1 military style rifle and ammunition in every home experiences almost no crime rate at all.
it's not the law abiding citizen who commits crime, it's the criminal. Law abiding citizens have the right to protect themselves. That is why I carry a fire arm with me at all times unless it is in a place where it is illegal. I was terrified to unload or load my husband's weapon and then when i started reading up on all this, i became more aware of my need to protect myself and my family. I'd rather spend the rest of my life in jail knowing i saved my daughters life than go through the rest of my life knowing that if i'd only had a gun, i could have saved her. Many people are like me pre gun ownership. Terrified at the people at Academy sports just looking at hand guns. Now, I want one locked at my front door and my husband and I have plans for each scenario including at home, in a resturaunt, and at wal mart even. Living in louisiana, near new orleans especially makes the need to protect myself apparent.
How do you feel about gun laws? Do you think everyone should have them in their homes according to their own personal want or need or should they be banned all together only for criminals to purchase them on the black market and citizens left to dial 911 and hope that they live to see the police show up in time?
