I know the common interpretation of it is laugh out loud! Until coming here I didn't know that and had always signed off with friends because we took it to mean...'lots of love'.
Using it here as many people do I think it is a way of making sure we don't misread things and take something that was mean to be funny in an offensive way. So adding a (smile), (nod), or (laugh) comment to things is a great way of sharing our ideas within respectful dialog and that sure works for me!
Cheers,
Raia

I agree, LOL seems over used. I use it alot. I tend to use it when I find something amusing or I am joking around. I have a very sarcastic sense of humor and tend to find a lot of things funny that I say. I guess, it is my way of showing some feeling or expression in what I am saying, also.

Yes, LOL is Laugh out Loud. There are also variations to it. ROFLMAO = Rolling on the floor laughing my a** out. LMAO, ROFL.. Wikipedia has a list of internet slang.. you should check them out.. the funniest on of them all is PLBKC which means, problem lies between keyboard and chair.. =))

Ok, I don't know about the rest, but I use it to show what my response is to something I have just read. You see, it can be very hard for the eyes to see great distances, especially if the author of the piece you have just read is on the other side of the world, so they can't see how you reacted either. By use of abbreviation, we are able to portray how we feel and read it quickly! Make sense? I'm on a ramble day, so if it doesn't, then sorry!

Well at first I too thought it meant Lots of Love - as an Australian expression - but when I started playing cards online - I quickly learnt lots of different expressions! and I then learnt that LOL was to express laughter - laugh out loud - It is not something you speak - but something you type - like a smiley :-)
