I have had my dog, Jersey, for about a year and a half now. He is an adorable papillion that I am terribly in love with! He was 2 years old when the previous owners asked me if I'd take him. I couldn't stand the thought of such a cute and sweet dog going to the animal shelter. So I agreed and took him in. The previous owner failed to tell me that Jersey wasn't properly house trained. I care about him so much that I wouldn't give him away for anything! So the question is, does anyone have any tips or tricks to potty train a dog that is already over 3 years old?

Most of the dogs I have trained have been under a year. I would suppose the process is the same for an older dog. Try a schedule, and go with the dog..rewarding after he goes. Otherwise, the tv show Dog Whisperer might be helpful.

Thank you for your advice. I have watched the Dog Whisperer, and really love that show. Unfortunately Cesar doesn't do potty training episodes very often. Maybe I should call him and try to get on the show! :)

Have you tried crate training? well my dog isn't that potty trained as well but what i've noticed with my dog is that he does his thing at a specific time of the day. It is usually after he's fed and so I bring him to the crate after he has eaten. I still think it's possible to teach old dogs new tricks. The best of luck on training your dog!

I'm not going to be able to give you any advice because I was in the same dilemma once and never did get my dog trained properly. My dog, Pugsly, was 6 years old when my husband got him from his girls. His daughters had pugsly since a young pup, we bought it for them for christmas one year, and they never trained him at all. So by the time they gave him to us he was 6 years old and doing his business all over the house. We had him for 3 years before we gave him back to the girls. We were only taking care of him till they moved out of their apartment and into a house, which took them 3 years. In those three years we were never able to train him completly. He still went all over the house and only went outside once in a while, when we had him outside for hours. He is now back with the girls for the last 2 years and they still have the problem also. I feel sorry for pugsly because he was never trained properly by these girls when he was a pup and it just seems too late to train him now. He gets his nose rubbed in it and yelled at, but to no avail.
