Can we cook for ourselves in the Old Dominion University?

Next month,I with my classmates will have a chance to visit the Old Dominion University.It is said that we can be given $300 salary per month.The old students told us that we must cook for ourselves because our salary is not enough and the price in America is expensive.We don't know it is true or not.Should we take some cooking tools if it is true?
