Strangest Thing!!

I just watched my female chihuahua grooming (washing) her face just like a cat!! She licked her paws and rubbed her face (and behind her ears) this went on for a good 5 minutes. I have had many dogs as pets but I have never seen this before. Has anyone seen this or is it natural?

Yes I think this is normal unless of course we both have disfunctional dogs LOL. I have a Maltese and have seen the same thing many times and yes for about five minutes each time. The other thing my dog does every single day is wash feet, sometimes for as long as 10 minutes. We keep our dog clean and brushed on an average of three times a week and I wonder if that's why. Perhaps when you keep the pet clean they follow the rules, who's to say but I do know dogs are very smart when given the proper home. I have often wished my dog could talk. Take care.

I had a maltese a few years back and he was very smart. Is your avatar your maltese? My avatar is my "extra" clean dog LOL.

I've caught my dog making a few licks on his paw and then rubbing behind his ear and on his face a little, most certainly not for 5 minutes though (more like 45 seconds if that). That's just too cute!! Perhaps your dog has a little bit of kitty in him..hehe.

Hi Jshean haven't see you around in a while. My little one was very thorough about her new toilet motions.

LOL both my dogs groom themselves that way actually but more so my male dog than my female...He almost seems obssessed with grooming himself..its a little annoying cause he's extremely noisy when he does it LOL

I clean around her eyes many times in a day. She has watery eyes and yet the other two never have to have their eyes cleaned but once a day.

My male chihuahua does that. When we got him he was just barely weaned from his mommy. I had three cats at the time and so his only playmates were his littermate and the cats. Both of the chihuahuas adopted "cat" habits. My chihuahua likes to lay across the back of the couch when the window is open too. He is just like a cat sometimes. :)

Two of mine also like to lay along the back of the couch and keep a watchful eye on things.

I have never seen that before. We have friends that brought their chihuahua over for the weekend and I didnt seem her doing that NOT ONE TIME! Maybe he thought he was a cat, seems like a confused dog to me...and 5 minutes!? he was obsessed. Maybe be has obsessive compulsive disorder!

I am fairly sure I have never seen my dogs do this. I may have seen my female mini fox terrier lick her paws, but not her face or behind her ears. The fact that your dog is female, may indicate a greater need to be clean, but even so, your dog must be highly intelligent to have figured out how to clean behind her ears. I love watching my cat wash her face & behind her ears, She looks so cute.

I groom my dogs every day but this one needs to have her eyes cleaned a lot so maybe she decided to do it herself. She really did it just like a cat.

Yes, I've seen dogs doing this...maybe not for extended periods of time but I have seen them lick their foot and swipe behind their ear a few times, then swipe their eye and brow. I don't know if it's natural or a habit sh'es picked up from watching the cat.

Heather do you have any cats for your chihuahua to watch groom? This does sound strange. Cute though. I've never had one to do that, but my mom still insists that when we were kids we had a cat and also a puppy we got for my brother as a Christmas gift, after the holidays (he lived with my dad) the puppy went to live with my brother, and my mom swears to this day that she heard the cat bark looking for the puppy b/c she missed her. So I guess it's possible for your dog to do this, maybe he/she thinks she is a cat. I bet it's cute to watch :)

Ha that would be pretty funny to watch. I have no Idea as to whether this is normal or not, animals do the craziest things. I myself have a cat who likes to sit upright like a human being and watch tv!!
