My son is 3 yrs old and he is very fussy about food. He only eat when he feels he is ready. But, I feel he is eating very less. He was anemic when I checked last year. I have not checked after that. I cannot force feed him. He spits it out. I try to give him dates biscuits. Low iron in body makes a child anemic. what is your suggestion? What do you give your child? Please share your experience here with me so that all those who are facing this problem of giving food to kids, benefit from here. Share your child's favorite recipes also ... Thanks

My son is now 14 and he eats the food what we eat. When he was 3 or 4 years, we used to give him boiled vegetables, rice, dal, salt and 2 glass of milk, some fruits.

We also use Ragi, another staple food of our state, fried witout oil, powdered and made as paste, add little salt. It is tasty. I am glad you not giving any ready made baby food. I do not think baby food is going to do any good.

I used to give ragi to my son when he was younger. now he does not like food that look and feel sticky. Ragi is really a good food for kids. I never gave my son any ready made foods. I too believe home made food are the best for kids.

Actually I too give my son rice some times. He does not eat same kind of food every day. He needs a change. I also give him khichdi which is his favorite. I add grated carrot in khichdi with lots of ghee. This way I try to compensate for other food that he does not eat. He drinks milk.

I found this link online http://pediatrics.about.com/od/nutrition/a/06_iron_foods.htm and hope this might help. Since he is a picky eater maybe you can give him vitamins to help as well - my son takes the gummie bear ones or flintstones because he does not eat vegetables and other nourishing foods. My son also likes ground beef in burritos with cheese, and with spaghetti like spaghetti bolognaise - even chicken sandwiches he likes - good source of iron as well. I hope this helps.

Hi, Thanks for the link. I really appreciate it. My son does not eat any kind of pills. It is very difficult to give him syrups too. He never took medicines orally till now. For fevers, doctors recommended suppositories for him. As for food, yes he likes sandwiches but eat a few bites and then says enough. He eats very less. I have gone thru your link. it is indeed helpful. I will check in detail and try to get that food. Regards.

My son hates to take vitamins. I got him Vita Balls. They are gum balls that contain vitamins. I don;t know if you ever let him chew gum or not, but it might be worth a shot if you do let him chew gum.

when my kids were that age they were fussy as well . Rather than trying to force a big meal on them, I offered snacks very very often, but healthy ones. I peace of cheese, or a slice of ham or meat rolled up , a couple of slices of apple, etc the thing is not to over wellem with large amounts. I also used to make them a milk shake with milk , ice cream, an egg, an a tiny bit of pureed veggetable like peas or carrot. I flavoured the milkshake with strawberry, or chocolate syrop to hide the color and they loved it. I also froze yogart like a popcycle and they loved that. With enough tiny snacks they get enough nurishment. If he was anemic a year ago, you should have been following up with a doctor, also vitamin supliments are good as well. Lavenderbloom no kid alive will eat date biscuits lol. Good luck

Hi, I do give him ice creams once or twice in a week. My son eat the date biscuit when he feels. Main thing is that he should feel like eating that is very rare. :)

When my son was 3 years old, he started refusing some foods that he liked before. I had no problem giving him vegetables, because before he will eat them without any fuss. But when he discovered the art of junkfood(courtesy of his daddy), he started refusing to open his mouth when he needs to eat his veggies. So, in order for him to still get his nutrients, I "hide" the veggies. Rice is our staple food and I just cut the vegetable especially the green, leafy ones into little pieces, and hide it under the rice. That way, he won't immediately taste the vegetable. Now, that he's 4 years old, letting him eat his vegetables is getting a little tougher. But fortunately, he loves to eat bananas, apples and mangoes. Aside from us, mommies, trying to give our kids the nutritious foods they need, I suggest that you give your child vitamin supplements. That way, what nutrients his missing from not eating, he'll still get from the vitamins. Goodluck!^_^

My nieces and nephews live with me. My niece Jackie is 3. She likes pizza, tater tots, chicken nuggets, ramen noodles,...That's kinda junk food though... Chicken has protein, so try getting some chicken and cut it up in small pieces he can handle it and let him try that with any sauce you know he likes... try beets.. I know it sounds weird but alot of kids seem to like them for some reason. My friend who runs a child care agency told me... raisins are REALLY good to try to get him to eat. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know...Good luck...

I am so very thankful that my one year and seven months old daughter loves vegetables a lot... from her first mashed potatoes to carrots and squash, she takes some green leafy vegetables this time with her rice. I am more into steaming of the vegetables, and she likes it, fish is the next food she want as well... :)

My daughter has never been fussy so i guess i'm pretty lucky - if you give her a full plate of food, the first thing she goes for is the vegetables. Low iron means your son isn't getting enough red meat - try making meals he liked that have more red meat in them. You haven't said what he does or doesn't like so it's hard to give examples coz he might not eat what people suggest. Try making pasta dishes that include minced meat in them, try sausages, my daughter loves them with a little tomato sauce & melted cheese on top (i slice them in to 2-3" pieces & then in half), Lasagne is a great dish too. My daughter eats pretty much everything so i have never had any problems - she is only 17 months old so she may get fussy later on. Just try & add red meats to as many dishes as you can - you could even try sandwiches, using ham or other meat slices. Good Luck!

My son's pretty picky. I can actually list the foods he'll eat: spaghetti (with tomato sauce or just a little butter), mac & cheese, pizza rolls, pepperoni, pb&j, grilled cheese, chef boyardee ravioli, bacon, toaster scrambles, toaster strudel, french fries, pop tarts, granola bars, fruit snacks/roll ups, pretzels, popcorn, pancakes, waffles, biscuits with honey, apples, grapes, raisins, bananas. Look into vitamins. I know flintstones had a "my first vitamin" and I believe it has iron in it. My son took those. They're for ages 2-4 I believe. Before we found those, my doctor recommended 1/2 of a flintstones with iron every day. He had a low blood iron count as well, so we needed to get iron in his system, but he wouldn't take the supplement the doctor prescribed.

My daughter is 9 months old and will eat anything I give her. I have not found a food she will not eat. She is completely out of the baby food stage and eating table food. Her favorites are squash of any kind, bananas, sweet potatoes, russet potatoes, green beans, and rice rusks. My son is almost 8. He is getting a lot more picky now than when he was younger. He wants to eat junk all of the time. His favorite thing to eat is popcorn. That is not exactly the healthiest thing in the world. It does have fiber at least. He will eat russet potatoes any way you can think to make them. He never turns down corn, green beans, or broccoli(good source of iron). His all time favorite dinner I make is scalloped potatoes with ham. They both really like yogurt and string cheese too. That is a good way for them to get their calcium. Does he like cereal or bread or rice or pasta? You can get these items enriched with iron. They are probably the easiest thing to get him to eat.

Hi, My son likes pasta and breads. Mother's feel good if kids eat well. I will try mashed potatoes for him. Once he ate then he did not. I think I can give it a try again. Thanks for your suggestions. I will keep that in mind.

Hi, Don't worry tto much about your kid. When he gets up in the morning give him a banana and little milk which will help in digestion. give a gap of 3 to 4 hours and then give food.after that again you give gap of 3 to 4 hours .During him meal give him jeera which helps in digestion in small kids.whenever he feels hungry give him lot of fruits which have fibre content. The main thing is maintain a gap of 3 to 4 hours which will help in his digestion process. Do not give buscuits or chocos which will hamper the digestion.Hope your kid will enjoy his meal. All the best. Bye.
