The ATM ripped us off!

It shorted us $30 this morning! He stopped on his way home and punched in $200. The ATM spit out $170 and stopped. He waited and waited for the rest but it printed the receipt and ended the transaction.
We don't have enough extra cash to just "throw away" $30. But how do we prove to the bank we didn't get our money? I mean if it was as easy as saying "hey your machine messed up and shorted us" everyone would be claiming that just to get a little extra cash.

You are so right about that...once the gave us an overdraft charge over a fee that THEY charged. It was one of those fees that only occured one in awhile so we weren't expecting it.
And by the way...when you want to coninue the discussion like this you should use :"add comment" instead of "respond to this discussion. That way your 2nd comment will appear in the same box as your first one. It saves a lot of confusion if people respond in between. It also makes it easier for me (or who ever started the discussion) to carry on a discussion with you even if it goes off topic.
Heres a short version of what I mean and how it should look:
dean: its amazing banks can get away with this overdrawn charges are even worse
foxy: You are so right about that...
dean: thanks for the tip (haha I had to put that in there :))
foxy: you're very welcome...and WELCOME to mylot too!

That's the thing, the receipt showed the amount he asked for, $200, not the amount the machine actually put out.

Hi foxyfire..
There are a lot of ways to check your claim made you by the bankers..
At one particular point of time in a day, say by 10.pm the bankers might know from the recorded logs, the sum of money in the ATM, the total amount withdrawn(punched in the machine for withdrawl), and the total remaining, after withdrawn.
If they check this between two particular point of times, and arrive the balance of money.. the could find the short fall of money..and should pay it to you.
Happy mylotting. Take care.

I am not surprised, though we never had an ATM rip us off, we have had our bank take our money before.
My husband used to have a majority of his check automatically deposited into his bank, then one time, we noticed that a good portion was not there, so only a very small amount goes in.
I don't trust our bank at all and want to change, but my husband has had this bank for so long, he doesn't feel he should go anywhere else..

Mine won't change either no matter how many problems we have with it. He won't do ret deposit either because at one job 3way back it was require and that bank "lost" an entire paycheck. It took them 3 MONTHS to straighten it out and give him his money. He was living pay check to pay check with 2 small children at the time, so he refuses to ever go through that again.
What did you end up doing to get your money back when they took a lot from his paycheck? Just curious if it took that long and what their explanation was for the missing money.

That is a bad experience with these ATM machines. Actually when something like this happens, first you have to call the machine's owner and claim your 30 bucks, then that owner will refund your money to your bank account.Actually the investigation comes after you get the money. And mostly, the ATM machines have a key logger system such that they can tell if you really punched in $200 and get $170.

I sure hope there's some kind of system in place. I'll have him call as soon as he wakes up.

Did you call them anyways to tell them? maybe whoever checks the machine can come out and take a look at it - it may have run out of cash? I'm not sure if that is good enough but I would of called them right away.

I think he should have called as soon as they opened this morning but he didn't and as soon as he got up he disappeared outside. The bank closes in about 3 minutes so I guess nothing will get taken care of today...

It happened to me too. I agree with everyone else here. Call customer service. Keep your receipt. The computer systems know how much you entended to withdraw (proof on receipt). THey can check how much money was in the machine. If the numbers that they have electronically don't match with the money in the machine then they will give you a debit on your account. I nearly flipped out on the gas station attendant when it happend to me. It's like debit/credits. If they are short money or have an excess of money where they shouldn't then the will have to give you your money back.

best thing is to call your bank's customer service and the bank who owns the machine... they will give you advice... this happened to me before and was even worse.. no money was despensed but i was debited... money was given back to me after 3-5 banking days which is really unfair!

Well 3-5 days is better than never...that would really make me mad if no money came out but we were still debited.

Just confirms my believe in NO ATM. I don't use them at all ever. Machines make mistakes and the "owners" of the mchines are not going to admit that and half the time you eat the loss. Receipts help, but in the end, you could still loose so just plan ahead and get the money out you need and keep it in a safe place. Emergencies? Yeah, they happen and if I had one where ATm was my only hope, I'd use it, but I hear to much of this happening. I'd just rather deal with a person so if there is a mistake it can be taken care of right then and there.
I happened to be in the bank today making a deposit and the teller encourages me to do the ATM and I asked her "why do you do that? ATM's just mean unemployment for tellers like yourself". She did agree with me and said she herself doesn't use them as they put holds on deposits - even cash simply becuase of time - put the money in tonight and you have to wait till tomorrow for it to register. Checks are even more time involved.
Sometime machines are not progress!

That's so funny because I don't like ATM's either. S/o rarely uses it either but this was one of those times he did.
