I have bought my computer in the mid of march in 2002. Yes dude .......it has completed ....5 years (congrats .....to my PC).
Well...the time came for that. One day it started giving problems.
Let me tell my PC configaration ... it is Intel 1.6 G Hz processor P4 (PIN type processor, motherboard is MS Link Chipset - SIS board (ofcourse ....now it is old) and 256 SDR Ram (now it is out dated).
Later on i added with Techcom TV Tunner, Techcom 4.1 channel sound card, D-Link Lan card & Internal Modem (frankly speaking ...modem is not required since ...LAN card is there ...for broad band).
I prefer to us ....Windos XP. All od asudden ...one day ..... my PC use to get hang frequently. I am having two hard disks and two drives.Hard disks ....one is 40 GB samsamg (five year old) and the other is segate 80 GB (2 years old). comming to drivers ..one is CD writte ( 5 years old) and the other is DVD writte ( 2 years old).
I did't figure it out ...what was the problem. I restared it ...then it started working . Then again after few days...the same thing ...repeated . but this time it did't work. I removed all the connections .....and reassembled it ..oh god ....then it started ....!!. So when ever i ahve this problem ..i do the same thing.
But .....this time it did't happen like ...that ...! I tried my level best to ..make it work. Then ..i reliazed that .....motherboard is not working. So i called HP service center ....and they sent ....an exicutive to check this . He told me that ....he has to remove th board , processor and RAM ...and he has carried it away to his service center. He told me that ....he will send the report ...by 2 working days. Today i recieved a call that ....there are major problems.
Processor ....pin were broken ... a lit bit ... ( even i dont know ...what was this little bit) ...later he told me that ...this processer is working with other board. .....uuuuuH ...so my processor can still work. but the motherboard is still not working ....he asked me so .....onw week sinnce ...this ...now a old model board ....and he has to get ..the spare parts ..... and he him self not sure that ...he can get spares in the market or not. Even he told me that .....almost ....we can through this board ...in the garbbage but let me try for the last time and hope this will work.
Now, what should i do ...?
should i go ...for a new ....... new motherboard...? if that is so ..it better to go with latest mother ..like D 101 which supports ...dual core processors. any my processors wil go waste. Since my old process is very old and even that is PIN type processor ...no one will come forward to buy that....and even i need to change my RAM from SDR ot DDR.
Oh god ...i have to chage ..major components ....of ,y PC...and it will cost me a lot....!!!
can anyone suggest me ....!!

Can you check the capacitors?Maybe it bloated.Replace all the capacitors not only the bloated one, but the same value of farad and voltage.I hope it can help.

I did it on a very old mainboard, and it worked :)
The broblem was the ramdom freeze of the computer, and after checking ram, cpu, video board etc...i changed the capacitors.
With a bit of luck it may work ;)

Check your power supply coz you were adding more & new components to your PC but never upgraded the power supply.

where are you from? socket 478 processors are still commonly used in some areas like my country (Philippines). although finding replacements is kind of hard, its not that hard to sell a second hand S478 processor
Also, from reading the info you gave, I would suspect the problem to be caused by your Power supply not your motherboard (especially the part where you mentioned that you had to remove all connections and reattach then and it worked afterwards).
And what did the technician mean by getting spares? getting spare parts for motherboard (like capacitors and stuff) are very complicated and is usually only handled by electricians not computer technicians. Computer technicians rarely have background on consumer electronics so they won't know how to reassemble chipsets and capacitors on the board.
Lastly, buying a new motherboard, CPU and RAM isn't that expensive anymore (assuming you don't go for the latest ones). An example is a semprom 64bit processor + motherboard + 512MB DDR2 RAM will cost only around P6000-7000 (around 100-150 USD). I don't think there is a need for you to replace your hard drive and other components like CDROM and casing (you may have to change your power supply though).
