What a very good topic to start, youless!
OffT: Table tennis or pingpong is really a very good cerebral sport. So good, in fact, that I became hooked to it.
If there's anything I admire about Chinese ping pong players, though, it would have to be their passion for it. Some of them even cry when they lose because they really have much pride in their abilities and they understandably do not want to let their supportive countrymen down. I definitely enjoy watching Wang Liqin, Ma Lin, Wnag Nan, and other skillful Chinese table tennis players because they are simply amazing--their movements are fluid, their fundamentals are sound, and their focus is intense.
OnT: In our country, basketball is arguably the most popular sport, but boxing is probably a very close second, while billiards is perhaps 3rd. The fascination for such sports in our country is absolutely electric. You could just imagine the number of basketball courts and billiards table in every street we have here.
If I were to guess why we go gaga over these sports, though, I would have to say that our culture, which was largely influenced by Western culture, and the local media are perhaps largely responsible for it.
In collegiate sporting competitions, for instance, basketball is always given premium. The media outfits in our country likewise tend to give media mileage more to basketball than to any other sports in the collegiate ranks alone.
In regard boxing, modesty aside, we have produced great champions (i.e. Flash Elorde, Manny Pacquaio, Gerry Penalosa, Nonito Donaire, etc.), and perhaps the perks given to these champions and the consuming thrill one easily gets out of a boxing match contribute to its steadily growing popularity in our country.
Billiards is also a popular sport here because, even if it does not enjoy as much attention as it should compared to basketball or boxing, modesty aside again, our country has produced great cue artists (i.e. Efren "The Magician" Reyes, Francisco, "Django" Bustamante, Ronnie Alcano, and a lot more). In fact, the World Pool Championships is currently being held here in our country and, so far, our local heroes are happily performing excellently.
I really hope that my post could somehow contribute in deepening this very interesting discussion. Happy myLotting, youless! ;)

Here in America, American football is king. Most of us watch it every Sunday and Monday. Many of us have played it, either at school or a light form of it in our back yards. It isn't too hard to learn. And it is very exciting to watch.Tied for second are Basketball and Baseball.

Yes, they overlap in November-February.After The Super Bowl, most of the football fans turn to basketball. Then in April, baseball starts. And baseball goes until October- November. So there is a sport to follow all year round.

Hi youless! Here in my country, Philippines, the most popular now is boxing. Although most are not boxers, mostly Filipinos are avid fan of the sports as well as basketball. And we also love to play golf and badminton. Take care and have a nice day.

i think it would be basketball. eversince the game was introduced here in the country, like ancients ago, it has been widely played in ever corner of the country.^__^;; even girls are now playing basketball here. even i had played basketball back in college. ^_^
and then boxing is also popular here especially these past few months and years because of our so-called national boxing champ Pacquiao who have won a lot of boxing competitions against popular boxers from mexico. ^__^

India's popular sport is cricket. It wins over all other games hands down. What is disappointing is that it takes the sheen of excellent sportsmen in all other sports. For e.g. India's only achievement in the game of cricket over the last 20 years is a Twenty Twenty World Cup which was hailed very much here. But, Vishwanathan Anand is a two time world champion in Chess. Indian juniors just won the world cup of Rugby which again was largely ignored by the media.
Cheers!

I think that Basketball is the most popular sport here in the Philippines by the fact that almost all community and schools has multiple basketball courts. Personally I'm an avid fan of the sport, be it college or professional league.
