how often do you apply oil???

i hate going out with oily hair.i always apply oil thrice a week in the night and wash it off in the morning.But people say we should not go out in the sun without applying oil as the sun's rays might damage our roots.do you believe in this?how often do you apply oil?

Many years ago I was in a hospital in Bombay. There was a woman there (I think she was a nurse) who applied coconut oil to my hair and braided it everyday. It was very soothing and my hair became very soft and shiny. I love the smell of coconut oil and if I could afford it right now I would order some online (there are no stores in my area that carry it).
Sometimes I put mayonnaise on my hair and leave it on for a few hours before washing it out. I use sesame oil on my skin. I stay out of the sun as much as I can though, so I don't worry about that.
