What is an RSS Feed?

I was hoping someone could explain what, exactly, is an RSS Feed, and how do I use one? I really appreciate any help you can give, as I am totally lost. I have so much to learn, yet. RSS is a family of webfeed format used to publish content such as blog entries, news headlines or podcasts. A web feed is a data format used for providing users with frequently updated content. An RSS document, which is called a feed, web feed, or channel contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with their favorite web sites in an an automated manner that's easier than checking them manually.
