Fall and winter road trips

I know spring and summer are popular times for road tips. Does anyone ever take them other times of the year? I am getting ready to go on one and just bought my first set of chains to get over the mountain snow. I am conidering driving instead of flying for the holidays too. Even though gas is a fortune. I just love the road trips. Anybody have one planned?
