Have you ever done something just for the heck of it / without a reason?

Often I have done things that we would say were spontaneous or without reason. But whether this is really without reason is another matter. perhaps a better way of looking at this is to ask, do we do things as ends in themselves rather than means to another end. Most of the things I do are means to an end. I boil the kettle and wash the cups and buy the tea and pour the milk all as means to the end of making tea. Now it might be possible to construct such narrative for any such action, even drinking the tea is done for the end of getting pleasure. This seems a little contrived to me however. So I think drinking tea is done as an end in itself. By this analysis I would say yes, there are thinks I do that are done without reason ans an end in themselves. all the best urban

You don't need a reason for every single thing you do. If that was the case...I would think life would be very confining.

dear waxiedoodle, you've got to be right, i think, because a person cannot analyze each & every action he does continually. one time, for example, this is funny, when i lived in hawaii, i'd see all the tourist walking around there from the mainland of the US and when i was standing one day at the international market place i saw a neighborhood girl from my hometown in new york walking around as a tourist. suddenly, without thinking, as a joke i shouted her first name out real loud from across the street!!i saw her looking up and down the street, bewildered because someone was calling her. i was laughing so hard, i thought it was very mischevious!!! i never told her or anybody about my trick!!
