I know this is an emotional topic for some. People are saying they are banning the movie. The Golden Compass isn't even out yet. Release date is set for Dec.9. Now to be honest, I haven't read the book and know nothing of it's author. I may end up reading it just to see what the hub bub is all about. How many of you judge a movie as having to be banned w/o viewing it 1st. I would find it better to watch the movie and then say ok here is why I think you should/or should not go see said movie.

This is the first I saw of anything being banned in terms of the Golden Compass and personally I think it's dumb. I looked it up. I never understand the banned books thing and I think it's just sorta silly and goes against the whole "Freedom of speech" thing.

I agree. What bothers me is from what I have seen it's being banned by people who haven't read the books, just word of mouth since the movie isn't out yet!

The author is an atheist and there is apparently a lot of anti-religion undertones in the books, purposely so. However, the filmmaker state that there is zero religion explored in the film, but then those boycotting state that they do not care because kids watching the movie may then want to check out the books..and that is the issue in a nutshell

the author has an opinion of his own. people should just get on with their lives and respect it, really. :)

goodness, some people just dont know the meaning of the term "freedom of expression". banning a movie doesn't necessarily mean people won't watch it anymore. in fact, i think it makes people want to watch it more, if you know what i mean. were sort of twisted that way, us human beings...haha... :p
if the author's an atheist, that's his belief...that's his life. they should respect it. why would they ban the movie? if they do that, i think it's silly. i hope they dont do it. it's like they're robbing people of the right to use their imaginations. i saw the trailer of the movie in youtube.com, and it was a fantasy type...we all know fantasy is fictional, so there's no point in banning...it's just a movie, it isn't a true story or something like that...if the religious people watch it, i dont think their beliefs would change just because they saw this movie...that's ridculous... :)
