Do You Listen to Your Body?

I was just wondering how many of you listen to your body enough to know when your health needs some attention. I have always paid attention to signals my body sends out, but I recently slipped up. The symptoms of fatigue, forgetfulness, etc., I put down to getting older instead of finding out what was really going on. Thankfully, my long-time doctor paid attention on my visit the other day and ordered blood work done. It led to his discovery that I am suffering from potassium deficiency, which can be fatal if not treated. I won't make the mistake again of ignoring any symptoms I might have.

I have no choice but to listen to my body, because I don't go for regular medical check-ups. I only find out something's wrong once the signs and symptoms appear. Anyway I try to exercise regularly. I also don't drink or smoke. So hopefully my healt is just fine.

You seem to live a healthy lifestyle, wisedragon. Smoking is the one thing that I have to give up that I will miss the most.

There's no harm in using home remedies, varunkrishna, as long as you know what you are doing. I am following doctor's orders though.

That is so true, potassium deficiency can cause stroke and seizure like activity. I am glad your doctor noticed this on your visit. It is time for me to have a good physical, and I will probably schedule one soon. I am finally going in to see the doctor about the recurring head and sinus and ear ache. It is one step. I hope you got some good advice about remedying this deficiency.

When will you have the testing done for the diabetes? I had a screening earlier this year that indicated I am okay at this time, but I should take some steps to lose weight, which I am not, and I do try to pay attention to what I eat. When I went in about my sinuses, the doctor says, come back for a physical sometime when you have time. He also thought that the preventative screenings I had courtesy of my one job were a good idea.

I think I pay enough attention to my only body. He gets best of the food, medicine, care and maintenance. As far as early detection of an ailment is concerned, its not always possible to think of big thing with a small of innocent symptoms. It might not be called ignorance but as I said before, early detection is the key which is always not possible. Anyway I don't think anybody does'nt care for his body.

Some people are just more aware of signals their body gives off, dan. Early detection is vital, I agree.

I'm listening! In fact I'm going to go to my doctor's tomorrow as I haven't been feeling too keen myself lately. I'm beginning to wonder if I have low potassium myself, although I might have a touch of my "old" friend bronchitis. All I know is that I've been feeling run down myself, might be my allergies or sinuses getting to me,as one of my symptoms is tiredness. I'm not usually one to rush to a doctor unless I feel like real crap...LOL..and lately yes, been feeling like do-do. Just don't feel like I'm all there. I'm going to ask my doc to do blood work too, as it has been awhile. So will let you know what's up with me

I hope you are fine, pyewacket, but get yourself checked out anyway. I've learned that I also might have diabetes. It runs in my family.

I do pay close attention to my body. I attribute most of my issues to aging. Although I do feel really good for my age and move around without any problems. I always have a positive attitude and think that also helps. Life is fun and I enjoy it!
Good to hear you did listen to your body and got to the doctor.

There are problems that come with aging, carolbee, but, like you, I feel great that I can still do pretty much what I like.

Many people ignore what their body is telling them out of fear of the unknown, nangel. You are right that it is always best to find out.

Like you, I try to listen to my body. Unfortunately I also tend to think that most of the time it is simply age and wear and tear so I don't like to kick up a fuss. I've learnt the hard way though, and now I know I should listen and take action

Yes, recycledgoth, we often put things down to age when it can be something entirely different.

I hope you were able to treat it worldwise. how are you doing?
As for me I tend to ignore what is going on with me until it gets to the point where I can't stand the pain - I know, not good but I suppose its because I put everything else ahead of me before I think of me i.e. my son and husband.

I used to have that same problem, maddysmommy, of taking care of everyone else. That is the luxury of being on one's own though, I now only have myself to worry about most of the time. I feel much better and I am trying to make the necessary changes.

Mostly when my sugar is acting up I listen closely since I'm Diabetic. Other times I'll ignore it...like when it says it doesn't need any chocolate but my mind says it does. LOL

My doctor thinks I might be diabetic, twoey, so I will have to make some serious changes in my lifestyle. I have to take it one day at a time.

Good topic. Yes, I agree with you that I do my best to listen to my body...but we all slip at times. You are right that our bodies do communicate with us but sometimes it is hard to interpret what is going on and what we need to do. I prefer taking a holistic approach whenever possible. However, when something does come up but the medical model is very useful in diagnosing a problem. That allows us to make informed choices about what steps to take.
Good health is a responsibility and sometimes people forget that. It is good to read how you approach things. This is a good discussion because it may help others to pay attention to their body talk signals too.
Best regards,
Raia

Hopefully, perspectives, someone reading this discussion will be moved to check out a problem that they are having. Sometimes we think it is something so bad we don't want to know. Usually it turns out to be something not so bad at all.

By all means you should take better care of yourself, u_sweet. The symptoms we get warn us that something is wrong.

I can tell pretty quickly if there is a problem that needs to be taken care of. I can also tell a few hours in advance when I am going to start my period, and sometimes I can even recognize the minute when it starts. If something's going on with my body, I usually figure it out right away.

Thank God for that doctor, Hon! I know how important potassium is because of my daughter's Crohn's disease and also because of my mom who has to take a water pill and also needs to take a potassium supplement because of it. That's what I heard might have been the cause of Terri Schiavo's condition that caused her to be in a vegetative state all those years, something possibly to do with an eating disorder. For some of us as we get older it just happens for some reason. Be sure to follow your doctor's advice and keep an eye on it!

yes, i am always paying attention to what my body needs and what it's been through. I always believe that it is the best thing to respond to whatever we feel before anything else gets worst. I always look for symptoms or any sign and do whatever precautionary measures I can do. It's better to be very attended than being sorry at the end...
