It's unfortunate that her bad health hasn't given her the incentive she needs to quit, but it only goes to show how strong the addiction is. Recent studies show that smoking is more personally addicting than heroin.
I smoke. I have for 15 years. Thankfully my health is good, better than it should be apparently. I was in hospital for my blood pressure not long ago, suffering severe chest pains. They took heart and lung traces while I was there, only for the doctor to come back and ask me if I was sure I've been smoking for 15 years. I responded that yes, in fact I have. He was surprised, then let me in on why. My lungs showed no evidence of it. According to him, my lung traces show what he'd see in the lungs of a casual smoker, not someone who's been smoking consecutively and constantly for more than a decade. So I'm one of the lucky ones.

WOW...maybe you don't inhale the smoke deep into your lungs like so many do..you are one of the "lucky" one's..this woman that works for me is soooooo pityful...she seems to be almost "drowning"...

Oh no, I do ... trust me, lol. I've just been incredibly lucky, although luck always runs out eventually. I'm still planning on quitting, although I won't even try until after xmas. The stress load right now is far too much to even bother trying.
I feel for your co-worker. It's an addiction, plain and simple, and that only goes to show just how badly she's addicted, if her current health wasn't a wake up call for her. It really is the hardest addiction in existence to get over, which is why more and more people are recognizing that starting to begin with is ridiculous.
