If you got stuck in an elevator, what would you do?

I just love Family Fued, watching it now. The survey question is....(refer to title).
I thought I was going to be stuck once. I FREAKED out! Literally. My sis had just moved to this apt building, and this was my first time there. I took a friend with me so we could have a fun getaway weekend in the city.
It was really old, the kind you had to pull the gate and latch it to get it to work. As soon as we climbed in with our over night bags, I didnt feel good. lol It was rather small, and I had went in first, so my friend was closest to the buttons and stuff. She pushed the floor we needed and nothing happened.
I wanted to get off, no need to make it stuck! She kept pushing the button over and over again, Im telling her to just stop and lets get off. Ill call her and she can come down and we can take the stairs. I was starting to shake and feel really uneasy, but she kept pushing the dam.n buttons.
I yelled at her, my voice in a much higher pitch from my growing fear that she turned to look at me with her face all curled up like WTF is your problem. I really wanted to punch her, push her out of the way and get the hell out of that elevator. LOL Its really funny now.
She started laughing at me and I found nothing funny until we got out of there. Once we got off and I felt free again, I laughed so hard that I had to sit on the ground. I had never felt so much fear from getting on an elevator before.
So....have you ever gotten stuck? If you have, what did you do? Or what do you think you would do?

I don't think I've ever been stuck in an elevator... I'm mildly claustrophobic so I'd probably get pretty antsy. Especially if there were a lot of people in it - I don't do crowds very well either.

Hi Dawn,
Well I had no idea I felt this way about small spaces!! This was a first too me. I think thats why I could laugh it off, I just imagined how crazy I must have looked. I couldnt get over my urge to hit my friend and push her out of my way! LMAO
I hope that you dont experience this!

We usually get stuck in the elevator when the power goes off. We wait for the security personnel to switch the generator on and then the elevator. There's a button in the elevator that rings a bell. But it does get scary when we get stuck between floors and the doors open (which would never happen with the old fashioned elevators).
So, all the kids have been given clear instructions not to use the elevator when they are alone. Some of them panic and would try to climb out and the elevator might start again. It's dangerous.

Yes, it does happen often at our place and the security guys are alert most of the time. They don't let the kids use it alone. I wouldn't try to climb out between floors. I'd wait for the power to get back on. Yes, it is scary and I'm glad you got out of the elevator and took the stairs. We stay on the 6th floor and I don't mind using the stairs..but with a baby and groceries..that's tough.

Hi SViswan,
You sound like you have to deal with this on a daily basis! How terrible. If I had felt that someone would have came to rescue us it wouldnt have been so bad, but clearly no one was going to be able to help us from a call button. lol It was a very old elevator.
Kids playing in it probably is what broke it down at my sis's place. I couldnt imagine trying to crawl out and then it start running again. How scary!!

I did plenty times. But the worst one when I was around 15 and we were going to my cousin confirmation.we just forgte about time somehow and was rushing to the elevator and i think we were too heavy or at least too much people. So we got stuck and the is button call ring, so we push it and push it and after five minutes someone come and they have to somehow open it and but not a normal way, the ground was about 50 centemetrs from us, so we have push each toher and went on the knee and got from the elevator like that. You can imagine in all those dresses we were all dirty. But we just clean it with some napkins in the car and wash rushing to the church.Finaly we made it ok and didn't miss anything. Also I got stuck many times in my apartman where I was living, but the secret was just push the door the most you can and it would work again. every elevator has own secret, you just have to figure it out, how it would work, when it is stuck. :)

Oh wow Laurika,
You have been stuck many times then!! I feel so lucky! Of course I dont use that many elevators, none around here to use. We have to climb the stairs. Which in your case might have been quicker and safer! Unless of course you had to walk many many flights of stairs. That might almost be as bad as being stuck! lol

At first there's nothing good on freaking out. just be relax and get off the elevator if you feel not good. just that. dont freak out. it will make things worst.
If things happen to me like this i will do my best not to freak out and stand still and call for help. not a single move so that elevator will not be press down and fall.
crazy hahh, actually im already freaking out...

Ahh sweety, that reaction is claustrophobia. It's a dreadful feeling. I would feel like I was being buried alive. How awful would that be? Just getting into a modern elevator starts the adrenaline rush in me. I have to focus on my breathing and looking up to the open space because the panic just starts to build .

Hi Tickle, yes it was a dreadful feeling! Im happy that you try and overcome it. Thats very courageous really. Most people would just avoid it. I have never felt like that on an elevator before, never! Im not really sure what came over me. But it was a good laugh afterwards. LOL

if i was with company, i would stick a cork up everyone's bottom to ensure no pollution of the air! (luckily i carry a bag of 6 corks everywhere i go for just such an emergency!) i would then explain to the prettiest trapee that we were going to die as the cable would only hold out for a maximum of one hour and would she mind taking my virginity before i die? i would then ask everyone to avert their gaze. (except the two fattest who would form the mattress)
If i was on my own i would huddle in the corner and cry like a baby!

LOL What a way to lose your virginity X! Sounds like a great plan, you are well prepared for this unfortunate event.
For your sake, I will hope that you dont have to use your corks or 2 fat people for a mattress. ;o)

Hi Brandy!
I told response #22 that Praying will distract you until help comes, I meant to tell you that! lol Im confused here, sorry.
I dont normally get on one that doesnt look safe, and this one didnt, so Im not sure why I got on it. I think I was just tired from being in the car on our trip and that looked like a better option than the stairs. Luckily it hasnt kept me from riding on others, just that one!

I had one to three such experience to stuck in elevator. the main thing when you stuck in elevator is to keep ourself calm because screaming and shouting does not make any faster change in situation, rather it makes you more disturb. Just seat down and wait for help.

Atleast I can say yes for me that I should keep cool. Because i came to this point to keep myself cool, as previously I made all affort to make myself out of stuck elevator...I shouted, throwing my hands and legs and at last I seat down and kept myself cool...lol
To keep myself cool ,......is only option. lol

though i've never been stuck in an elevator before, i've had many dreams of having been.
there was one particular dream wherein i opened the operating box and helplessly started to pull out the wires hoping that the doors would open... haha..it sounds so weird doesn't it?
anyway... if i do get stuck in an elevator i wish i wasn't stuck with a psycho killer...hahahah
seriously,,, i'd probab;y hyperventilate if i was such in a situation...

Hi Nizzy,
Well I dont suggest you pulling the wires like you did in your dream if you do ever get stuck in one! lol Doesnt sound like a good idea for the real world. Praying will distract you until help comes!
When I lived in the city they had a Hiton Hotel that was 30 stories tall, and they had a glass elevator in it, as you rode up you could look out and see a lot of downtown, we used to ride it just to look at the view! But those elevators were much nicer than the one at my sis's apt building. As long as I trust it, Ill ride it. I just didnt trust this one. lol

Hello Figuah,
Well freaking out isnt so bad! lol Natural human reaction in most of us. I certainly didnt have a problem with it. I dont know if I would have been more freaked out alone than I was with someone. I just know that there would have been no telling how long it would have took to get us out of there. My weekend visit could have been spent in an elevator! lol

I've never gotten stuck, BUT If I ever, God forbid, got stuck in my lifetime, I'd freak, scream "Get me outta here!!!" and bang on the door, and most probably choke and pass out... because am a 'bit' clustrophobic. LOL YEa, thats the truth, the thought of it scares me.
I've seen two very bratty freinds of mine get stuck, when we were kids. The both of them were actin smart and goin up and down, and suddenly they got stuck, boy they looked like two scared lil kittens! haha but I was more scared then they were, had to push the alarm button and call the guards. But it was a whole hour before they were out.
From that day, I never took the elevator, luckily I was on the third floor, so dnt have to take a lotta stairs. :)

Hi Leanette,
You definately learned from others mistake here. lol Yeah living on the 3rd floor is not too bad. I think that was sort of the funny part about us, my sis stayed on the 2nd floor, like it was that far to walk. LOL It wasnt too bad, we had to take them all weekend anyway, or any time I visit her. I certainly didnt think I was claustrophobic til then, but I guess I am a little bit!

LOL Hi Raven,
That was good that you could keep your cool. I dont know what came over me, but I was terrified! Ive never felt that way in an elevator before. Ive even used ones that were way older than the one I was in. I remember one that I used that you had to hold the up or down button the hole time. If you let off of it, it would stop. lol

So the first thing I will do that I will call a frnd thru my cell ...
if that doesnt work ... I will shout like baby !!!
thirdly, if everything fails ... I will pray to God ...
Nothing more !!!

I have been stuck on one once! I was maybe 5 or 6 years old, it took them about 1 hour to get us out. Ever sence I wont go in them, when I was in labor with my daughter my mom had to push me into the elevator at the hospital I wanted to take the stairs down 4 floors. Good thing I didnt my daughter was born less then 30 minutes after I got there LOL!

What a trooper you are! lol Ive never been in labor, but I dont think that I would be questioning getting on an elevator when Im in it. lol Id just be worried about getting that baby out of me!

Hi Ayou,
I dont want to be stuck for any length of time! lol Not even one minute!! I mean if it ever happens I will just have to do my best, but unless its more than just a few flights of stairs, I will take the stairs. lol Much safer I think. May not be quicker, but there is no luck of getting stuck. lol

I am pretty sure if I were to get stuck in an elevater that I myself would panic and not know what to do. It would be even worse if I was stuck down there by myself. I'm not so sure what having another person there can do, but i guess the saying is right that "misery loves company". But then again, in today's world almost every elevator should have a telephone on it so you could call someone and tell them what has happened, or try to call the company where you are and tell them that you are stuck, but I would definetly panic. i think it's one of those situations where you know that it is not that serious, yet you panic anyway.

Hi Angel,
Yeah most recent ones do, I just think this was an old building with an old elevator that didnt work and we didnt know it. I wasnt going to take my chances though! I wanted off, and I wanted off now.
I know what you mean, its not really that serious, but its a freaky thought. Maybe too many horror films with something similar in it. LOL I can think of a few films that had scary elevator scenes in them.
