How can you be sure that money you donate, will get to the proper hands? I know for sure that most of the donations to African countries end up on the banking accounts of the local polititians. What can be done to avoid that?

I used to be a big charity giver when I was working but I have heard so many stories that I don't give any more, once upon a time people used to volunteer to collect for charity today they get good wages for doing it in most cases in this country anyway, so most of the donation money goes towards the wages of the collector.

All I can suggest is to donate to the Red Cross and other well established organizations. They should be safer than a new group.

I think the Red Cross does great things. However, your statement is not necessarily true. Remember how the money given to the Red Cross for 9/11 was misspent. AND how money given to them for Hurricane Katrina relief didn't all go to where the donors wanted it to go? Bigger doesn't mean better - sometimes it means more people with their fingers in the till.

I believe that most charity funds go to administration costs and thisnis why I don't give to charity. I also have a problem with dollars for research. How long do we have to wait for the research to be viable? Do they really want to find answers? Won'yt the researchers be out of work if they do. I'm in my mid fifties and cancer research has been going on ever since I can remember. I think this is a bit ridiculous. There is other research that has also been going on for decades.

Can do by giving to visitors to those countries . Also by doing for some of shows to be performed . Through embasy i think also will be leak proof. Herein india we are personally visiting thechatirities or gurukul and ofering the cash and clothings etc., before use we can see it is distributed.

I give through my Church in the form of offerings and some members of my Church also belong to some of the charitable organizations that have the proper checks and balances in that they give most of the money to the people who need it. I do not mind a small administrative costs such as record keeping and budgeting but most of the money should go to the people. I also believe that the people once they get the money, they use it to start small farms and businesses as well as feed themselves. I do not like all the money going to Africa, for instance, as I believe poverty has no skin color.

I believe in charities (or Non-Profit organizations) because I work for one. www.WolfHaven.org I have worked for several over my life. My experience is that you are better able to know where you money is going by giving to your local non-profits. The bigger the 'business' the bigger the overhead. Huge orgs (don't want to name any but just look in your mailbox...you probably get solicited by them on a regular basis) have HUGE admin costs and can't guarantee that the money you give will go where you want it to go. When you give to your local charity the likely hood is that the money stays in your community - helping your local economy as well as your own neighbors. There is a great online resource called www.guidestar.com. You can go on it and look at US charities 990 form (IRS tax form that states where they get their $ and what they do with it). It helps you see how they use their money. Now, saying all that, ALL charities have overhead. I am employed by a non-profit and my salary has to be paid. I am NOT independently wealth and cannot afford to give my time for free, I need a job. I'm lucky I have a job that allows me to do what I love and help wolves at the same time.

well, i've discovered that an organisation here in belgium called 11.11.11 only ships 1 € out of 100€ to the poor countries, can you believe thtat? that is not fair to the people over there. so they need 99 to fund their organisation and 1 only goes to the poor..
