Sorry this is another dumb duh discussion but I am really curious. Lately I have noticed that many people in the limelight, especially politicians are in or in front of a crowd and they point at someone. Why? Is it some kind of gimmick? I don't believe they have suddenly seen/noticed someone they know in the middle of hundreds of people. Has anyone else noticed this?

The pointing is just like pretending, saying "yes, you, i am talking to you". It's like establishing audience participation. :)

I've seen it and I don't like it. The way I was raised was that pointing was rude and shouldn't be done. A nod in the persons direction with eye contact works as well and a full palm up turned hand does too, but never a palm down hand with one finger pointing. I know that the theme parks in Orlando will not let their employee's
point. They have to use a full hand jester.

Pardon my ignorance but what is a "full hand jester"? Is it perhaps something the staff wear that is comical and amusing? I'm picturing one of those big gloves shaped like a hand, except this one's a court jester pointing the way. I've never heard this expression here in Australia.

No Heather, I haven't noticed that I do know that when they want to be elected, they will come to any church, and try to get their votes, you don't even see them till election time comes, now that is what I notice, about politicians.

I do not watch TV very much, so I am taking your word for it. As you have mentioned it, I seem to think you are correct. Why do they do it . . . to show that they identify with a sign or placard someone is holding, or that they like someone. That would be the normal person's reason. The cynical side of me says that some press agent, or crowd psychologist has told them it will give them the appearance of having connections in the crowd, and of being a common man, and therefore will make the crowd like them better. Any gimmick to garner votes. Funny how that cynical side of me raises its nasty head.

I think for the most part it is a gimmick...something to make people feel like they have been singled out and lord knows in a crowd a single point can cover a few dozen potential votes...lol. I not sure it would be worth reminding people that pointing is impolite...:}
