Why Iowa and New Hampshire?

Every four years the spotlight is on two small states that don't seem to get much attention any other time, Iowa and New Hampshire. The first Presidential Caucus is in Iowa and the first primary is in New Hampshire. Apparently, this can't be changed ever for some reason I don't quite understand. Does anyone know what makes these two states so important that they get to have that much of an impact on who our next President will be? No offense to Iowa or N.H. residents, but I'm from Pennsyvania and we're on of the very first states and we don't even matter!

He annie, Eh-lo from new hampSHA!
Yes, we in fact go out of our way to make sure we have the first primary, lol,it's little secret known outside the state, but because of a friendly rivalry with Michigin over this, our N.H. secretary of state waits until Michigin anounces their's to decide ours, lol! By our state's constitution, we can announce ours with as little as 2 weeks notice. We are also the first state to cast a vote in the general election in one of the northern most towns in the state, Dixville Notch. The polls open at midnight there. I'ts a tiny little town with a population of about 25 (no joke, 25) and they have an uncanney nack for acurately predicting the winner by th results in that town.
New hampshire is often listed as a "blue" state. This suprises most people here as were are actualy a very conservative and libertarian population. People tend to lump all the new england states in one catagory assume it's like one big state. We are in fact very different, each one. Vermont massichusits are very liberal and progressive while maine and new hampshire are pretty traditional.

Thank you so much for a history AND civics lesson here! Sorry I missed this response somehow until I read about it in my other discussion. I knew about that little town that votes first; I couldn't remember its name but I knew of its existence. I know people tend to lump all of New England together but I knew better...lol!
