What on earth a laptop is?

Often seeing people talk about laptop, I think maybe they are something wrong btw NB and laptop.
Firstly, let me give a sample, Who can tell me emule comes from? that is to say, who are they father or mother, definitely, you are right, no need I spk out.
So,it is clear that laptop is one thing btw desktop and NB,yesterday, I saw a film, one women use a computer, that is laptop, why I know that? coz the type in the film i ever used before.
Let me explain more detail, laptop looks like NB from appearance, but the memory,CPU are same as desktop, what is more,some laptop no battery.
The result is that ,basically, the laptop is bigger than commom NB(except for house cinama or play game and so on).
I remembered some plant produced loptop during 2002~2004, but now almost no plant make it, at least no listened by me

at least now, I think you response is the best explain,
but to a Notebook maker, they always need some different name to distinguish the product.
if a notebook is same as all the other type(NB), but only no battery( no connector for battery,must use adapter), how we can name it?
by the way, I have such a computer.

eeeh,laptop is simply a small computer as size,smaller than the classic notebook or better the upgrade in commercial view of notebook..which the small size of size is not a problem towards the power in it!!so it can be powerful as a desktop as well!
an example of laptop there are much now ibm,dell,sony/vaio,hp..all major brand in computer now sell laptop..because is a miz between a compact hi-tech product and a powerful pc too!!
