Nice simple question for all you animal lovers! who is smarter and more street wise, the cat or the dog?
and why? i'll go for the cat as it seems to take the pish out of humans. sleep all day and disappear all night!
one last question. why do we say it's raining cats and dogs?

I agree about cats being smarter.
Mind you, we've been having some real trouble with the roomie's dog lately, I had to punish her for getting on a peice of my furniture to get to the cat food the other day & then today she went after Rose.
And, I think, but don't know for sure, that the term "raining cats and dogs" comes from when it started raining the cats & dogs came running in - either to the house or, more likely, into the barns/sheds/stables in the old days.

Oh, I would definitely have to say cats are smarter. I say that for lots of reasons. They are more independant, they can escape alot more often from places than dogs, they clean themselves, and one major thing. I've never seen a cat eat krap, and I have seen many dogs do it. That is a biggy to me. I don't know about the raining cats and dogs thing.

I have never seen a cat eat crap, and have never heard anyone else say they have. They are a very clean animal. I love them so much. lol Yes, the burglar thing is true. It was on the news.

Undoubtedly dogs, in fact border collies have been shown to be able to learn command words as fast as a human infant!
Not only that but a collie can work out of sight of its master rounding up sheep and some collies have been known to work alone.
It is because Wolves and other canines are social creatures to a much greater extent than cats that they evolved a greater intelligence.

By the way the word 'more' is redundant in your question. As a native English speaker you should be setting a good example for all the people learning English.
So, your question should read, "Who is intellectually superior." or "Who is more intellectual."

I also go for the cat. Cats are very intelligent in their own quiet way. They refuse to give in like many dogs do. Unfortunately, if someone breaks in your home or apartment, you're on your own, as far as the cat is concerned. And as for the last question, I honestly don't know.

Haven't you heard about the burglar that broke in to the old ladys' apartment, and her cat jumped on his back, and clawed him so bad, that he ran back out the door screaming? I heard that a few years ago, on the news.

Well, I say cats for two reasons. 1) They sleep about 20 hours a day, and 2) Who ever heard of a witch with a dog as her familiar?
They are more agile, too, because who ever heard of a dog who could climb a tree. But they must not be born smart; it must come to them over time, because otherwise how can we explain kittens climbing up trees and then being afraid to come down. Duh! Score one for the pooches.
Dunno about the rain. Only thing I've ever seen it rain is fish and frogs.

Ok. Cats are smarter. They actually think before they act. it has been scientifically proven too and it is the reason why cats are more independant and dogs are more loyal. As for the saying, i'm still trying to work out why we say 'when pigs fly'. i mean, there are hundreds of other animals to pick on and pigs get chosen. Same with the cats and dogs.

in my opinion, cat is smarter than dog. cat can find out everything by her ownself without any help for the first thing. what i mean here when they having difficulties to do something, cat seem can solve her problem quickly than dog. but for obeying people, dog easier to teach to be obedient to people. i wish i can have a little sweet dog someday.

Firstly, I loved the pic! Ok, so I'm biased here, shoot me but the cat is the most intellectually superior after all they have been worshipped by the Eygptians and by witches from down the centuries, they are remarkably independent, they don't need humans they adopt us, we don't adopt them, dogs rely heavily on humans. Cats are crafty and will use any means necessary to get what they want, when they want and how they want it! The cats wins hands or should I say paws down!

Without a doubt, cats are brighter, more sophisticated and totally in control. We own dogs but cats own us. There's a quote I love that sums it up: "Dogs come when we call them but cats take a message and get back to us". Don't know where that comes from but I love it....Don't know about raining cats and dogs but haven't small rodents and fish been drawn into the atmosphere and come down with the rain? Maybe a hard rain would suck up cats and dogs and they would pour down.....Pish is the name of one of our cats.

Based on my observations, cats and dogs are pretty much like us. They have the brilliant ones and they also have the dumb ones. They have leaders as well as the followers. Therefore, based on this, I would give this a tie. LOL!

Cats any day xboxboy....dogs are sweet loyal but they can't seem to think for themselves. But cats have character and some of them have just major attitude as well. And if you watch them close you can actually make out when they are grinning or looking down their nose at us humans.....and as for 'raining cats and dogs' i read in another discussion here on mylot about how in old times before we discovered brick n motor people lived in homes made of straw and since many had pets the usually slept on the thatch on top. And when it rained heavily the animals ofcourse fell along with the thatch! It was sometime back i read that so i don't have the link. I wish i had it though. There were explanations for
so many other saying as well like 'don't throw the baby out with water' etc etc

Normally level of intelligence is determine by ratio of weight; brain to spinal cord. Human 50:1, Dolphin 40:1, Cat 32:1 and Dog 30:1. So I choose for CAT is the more intellectually superior compare to DOG. But dog has more on smelling sense and an advantage over cat.
Why do we say it's raining cats and dogs?
My answer it is just like "Houses had thatched roofs, thick straw pile high". It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the pets, dogs, cats and other small animals, mice rats, bugs, lived in the roof. When it rained, it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof.
This is also the reason why four poster beds developed. The idea of the 'roof' was to keep from nasty things falling into your open mouth when asleep! The side curtains kept out the drafts.
There are many other derivations to this phrase, one also being:-
It has also been suggested that at one time the streets of British towns were so poorly constructed that many cats and dogs would drown whenever there was a storm; people seeing the corpses floating by would think they had fallen from the sky, like the proverbial rains of frogs.
ALSO
It seems that cats were at one time thought to have influence over storms, especially by sailors, and that dogs were symbols of storms, often accompanying images and descriptions of the Norse storm god Odin. So when some particularly violent tempest appeared, people suggested it was caused by cats (bringing the rain) and dogs (the wind).
Thats all from me, xboxboy.

I would say both because cats just sleep, eat, smarter, and just chill..
Dogs are more playful protective and bark all the time...
Even though i have dogs and cats i trained my dog not to bark all the time and my cat to warn me when someone enters my house so i would pick both....
Dogs also get in the way sometime ao all you have to do is put them away in a room or something
And the cat just suts around and doesnt get in the way so its hard to choose

I have a cat and I feel that he is not that selfish and he cares for me. I admit that he sleeps a lot but I don't find my cat less intelligent than a dog. Cats are intelligent in their own ways and they also know how to show their gratitudes.

I think the cats and dogs are intelligent but cats are more cunningly intelligent and dogs are faithful. It is funny but cats seem to steal food in an intelligent way but dogs always wait for their master to have their food and wait for their leftovers. They never break into house and steal food. It's just a thought.

Cat is more intellectially compare to dog. My reason is cat more smart in surviving itself and more discipline. It can manage it life better than dog. Furtherance, having a cat as a pet is easier than a dog. We just need to feed it everyday, other thing, it can do on its own.
For me, having a cat is like loving little baby where we can talk, express our problem even though it can not give any response but cat is a very good listener to me. As a cat lover, caring my cat can reduce my stress! I really need it. And I will feel happy having it. My Cat is my friend... Meowwww!!

cats are definately smarter. They do what they want when they want. If you threw a stick and a human went to fetch it they would be consider dumb, right? so why does it make a dog smart to be able to do that? Cats see the stick... .look at you, then continue to do what they are doing... I call that smart.

I'd have to say the cat, being a cat lover myself. My cat Nimbin makes it seem like he is the master sometimes and I am to be at his beck and call. I think not but cats do expect us humans to be their servants. Dogs are intellegent to but cats do have us unde their paw.
