I can only tell you that salt is a disease precipitator and conditions like kidney failure and heart problems could be aggravated by eating more salt than the body can handle.

Eating too much salt can cause high blood pressure. High blood pressure can cause heart disease and other health problems.
Sodium is the part of salt that increases blood pressure. There is more sodium in salt than any other food that we eat. We eat salt because it makes food taste better. It enhances the flavor of almost everything we eat. Yet eating too much salt is dangerous.
The body needs sodium to hold water in the blood vessels. Sodium also regulates water balance in all parts of the body. If too much water is held in the body, the amount of blood increases. If it increases too much, problems will arise.
The increase in blood makes the heart work harder. The result can be high blood pressure. Other conditions, such as diabetes, can cause high blood pressure. The most common cause is eating too much salt/sodium. When high blood pressure is not controlled, it can lead to a heart attack, stroke or kidney disease.

I am not a medical practioner but I will tell what I know, based on what others told me or had experienced. I guess eating lots of salty food will contribute to kidney problems if the person don't take or drink lots of water.
My father has an end stage kidney problem and is now undergoing 2x a week dialysis. He likes to eat 'bagoong' which you know is salty. Aside from that he has high pressure and arthritis. They said that when you are taking medicines for high blood pressure and arthritis and other pain reliever medicines, you are also prone to kidney problems.
I guess our lifestyle and what we eat contribute to health problems such as kidney problems, high blood pressure, etc.
