Laying up treasures on earth

Today in Sunday School we had a discussion on St. Matthew 6:19-12 "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt and where thieves do not break through nor steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." Anyway it became a very hot discussion and the point the teacher was bringing across based on the full chapter was that we should have such faith in God that we do not need to save for a rainy day. First of all, I would like to know what is your definiton of Treasure - (something you hve great love for - my definition) and next is it necessary for us as children of God to save for a rainy day? Opinions will be appreciated. God bless

Well, Treasures to me, are way more than Monitary value when it refers to Treasures in Heaven. And I do agree that we do need to Trust and believe God to bring us thru with a lot of things in our life, but it is also Good to plan and save for times in our life where we could use some Extra money for Emergencies, or planning on things such as Retirement, Large Purchases, Vacations, etc. Because you never know when things could come up in ones life where you just might need some Extra money and if you have a little bit saved up, you will be a lot better off than if you have to find someone to help get you out of that situation or two.

God knows about the emergencies before they come up. He provides well for those too.

I do not believe that God wants his children to be dirt poor and begging for hand outs. But, I do believe that he wants us to put our trust in him, instead of uncertain riches.

I beleive that God gave us wisdom in everything. Abraham was wealthy, so was Lot, Isaac and a lot of the Bible characters. I think that if they ahd not saved and invested wisely them they would not be able to procvide for that very large family they all had. I think there is a lesson for us in all of that.

No, I do not believe that it is needed, nor do I live my life this way. I use wisdom yes, but I trust God for all of my needs and he is there with what I need right on time. People would be surprised if they realized how much God cares about the little things when it comes to his children. You don't always need money when you have God. He will have someone come over out of the blue and take you out to eat. One day, I called my sister to borrow some money for something to eat. She was not home, but my brother-in-law was. He said, why don't I pick you up for the church barbecue today. At the end of the day, I was full and happy to have spent time with my sisters husband and her kids. On top of that, I was able to bring enough food him to feed my other sisters six children. God loves to prove himself to his children. Read Matthew 6:25-34

One of the ways to re-enforce the things that God has done for us is to tell others. Giving glory to God for the things he has done helps us to remember them. Therefore, we remember his faithfulness when it is time to trust him again.

Actually Rozie thats the scripture we were discussing. it somehow also reminded me of when I was going to Bible school. I would need a pairt of shoes and i spoke to God about it and for the week I would have collected more than enough to buy the shoes and yet I told no one but God. He does care about the little things. I beleive that I get so caught up in achieving things sometimes that God is left out and all I can hear myself saying is "I" and not GOd. I ahve to be honest I dont trust Him as much as He has asked me to.

Since we don't know when Jesus is returning to collect his own, we should live each day as though it is the last one here on earth, but at the same time we need to plan for the future. To me the treasures here on earth are the things thatmean more to one than God. They are the things that One thinks they can't live with out. Treasures are the things that are sought in theis world. It can be any thing from an expensive car to a so called good name.

Yeah! I smiled at your lst line but it is really true. God is the only person we cant live without and we should indeed live our lives as if it is our last. Thank you very much

It simply means we should not love earthly things more than our salvation. Wisdom dictates that we should be ready for the rainy day and the Bible says we should always be ready and this does not refer just for the readiness for the coming of the Lord. If we do not decide well, we will be termed as foolish. We should not depend upon the Lord to give us food if we knew that the flood is coming. But we should do everything with prayer.

Money - Money is the most essential commodity in this whole world.
Hi Sharon! I do not agree with the teachers interpretation that one need to have faith in God and need not save for the rainy day. The Bible says that Faith should be backedup by action or deeds. Treasures of the world can be anything which is of great value to you like money, possessions etc which are perishable or can be stolen. Treasures in heaven implies the deeds done by you when you lived on the basis of which the almighty would make his judgement which cannot be destroyed by anyone. Well, It is necessary or one to save for the rainy day. Even ants and other creatures save for the rainy day though they do not have brains like humanbeings. There is a saying "little drops of water makes the might ocean". One need to cultivate the habit of saving money on a regular basis to have a stable and seccured life in the future. One can plan all the major expenses like marriage, childrens education, home, holiday, retirement etc through proper financial planning and systematic investments.Do I sound like a Banker here, lol.

Thanks Ann and I honestly get confused sometimes because I know that God does make provision for us and I also know that he gives us wisdom to manage everything he has given us wisely, our time, money, everything. However when I think of the possibility that we must not make plans for our future and our children then it had me wondering becoz there were a lot of rich men inth eBible, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Esau toname a few and their inheritance would be for the children. So even from a banker's point of view it sounds very feasible to me and quite reasonable to plan for the children and our future. Well thats your job to guide us right and thanks.

Personally i think the verse is just emphasising that we should not focus on the things of the world at the expense of spiritual things. God still wants us to work, still wants us to earn a living, and pay the bills. Just that we should not be so consumed by the desire to stock up early treasures that we neglect reading the bible, serving in church, caring for our family and friends. By extension, of course we should save for a rainy day, but even so prudently, and not hoard our savings. If we tithe, and save some money for emergencies i don't think there's anything wrong with that. it's being a good steward with the funds God has blessed you with.

Treasure to me are things you value so much that you only bring them out on occasion for fear that you would lose them .. You might even have them insured. The treasure of Heaven are the best.

Hahaha! That was a good way to get some sleep. I figured out from it that the master had so much worries about his money (treasure) that he could not sleep. He passed it on to his servant who had the responsibility of ensuring that the riches are still there so he could not sleep. Dont think I ever wnat to be in that position at all. Thanks. It helped.
