Even I have found..without even thinking I skip the first piece of bread in the loaf to get to the second piece..I decided to start eating the heal..It doesnt taste any different then the rest. Why do so many throw it away or leave it?

Interesting! I don't eat it either. But my husband doesn't mind and he eats it. So, we don't actually throw it away. I think 'I' don't like it because I can't really make a proper sandwich with it(even if I use both the heels, it isn't exactly the same) and it sort of bulges a little and not exactly like bread on one side (if you know what I mean). It's like eating too much of the crust rather than bread.

Crust really is bread..only it's the bread closest to the pan when baking..It has all the same properties..just a little darker then all the rest..and usually the bread companies cut them pretty thin any more..that is the crust.

I do eat the heel of the bread. I usually toast it and put butter or jelly on it. I really like the heel on homemade bread. When I make homemade bread my hubby and both like to eat it.

I used to do the same without thinking too!! No- one in our house eats it for some reason. My granddad always told me that eating my crusts would make my hair curly lol!!! I just leave them to one side and after a couple of days, (we eat a lot of bread), I make croutons for homemade soup, or if there is loads then I make bread and butter pudding. So my family dont mind leaving the heels of the bread!!! :-)

Well good for you:) Glad someone here likes the "heel"...When toasted ..it really tastes like regular bread and if you get enough..brush across some butter and sprinkle some garlic powder or salt and you will have garlic bread:)

Nice to meet another crust eater: *heel* ..I think it's firmer then the other and not as crumby.
