Must you DRINK when you EAT?

I guess I am speaking to a group of humans here so we all do eat from time to time... right? :P
When you take your meals, do you need a drink to go with them?
By "drink", I do not mean any alcoholic stuffs. It can be just some plain water or even soup. I know 2 extreme examples - one of my cousins refuses to take in any food unless she is served with water as well. She says she will choke otherwise. I also remember a friend who loves "dry meals". He likes ordering all those fried stuffs to go with his meals - so much so that it is hard to find any moisture (unless you include oil...) in the food. And no, he doesn't drink anything after eating too.
For me, I don't mind eating dry stuffs but I still need to drink something *after* the meal. Try surviving a day or 2 on just potato chips and not drinking any water. I certainly can't stand the "dryness"!
So, must you drink something when you eat? Do share your thoughts. =)

My sister-in-law had that gastric bypass surgery and one of the things they told her is to NOT have anything to drink prior to, during or directly after eating. The liquid helps flush the food through your system faster, allowing less of it to be absorbed, making you hungry sooner.
I have to have something to drink with my meal, probably just because it's habit.

patgalca - I had someone tell me once that if you drink a big glass of water before you eat, you wont have enough room for a lot of food, so you can diet better. Which makes sense... But it also make sense that if your stomach has liquids in it, you can't absorb the nutrients you need from your food so you're still going to need to eat more... Who knows who's right???

That is interesting. I find that if my husband or daughter fills up on milk or pop (if eating fast food), then they don't eat as much food because they are too full. But then, perhaps they are hungry again a half an hour later. I never noticed.

Having soups with meals is good - both for the liquid and doubly so if the soup is a nutritious one. =)

I will always drink some water when I eat. I cannot see how anyone can eat food without some liquid to go along with it, unless they are having soup. If the food is dry, then waiting until the meal is over does not make any sense, unless you want to show how brave you are or have an excess of saliva in your mouth that drinking is unnecessary. Also water is good for you, so either that friend of yours has a high metabolism or where he lives, the rain is so steady he can absorb it like a sponge into his skin.

I don't know why I don't drink with my meals. It's not a macho
act just the way I am. Once in a great while I have a small sip
of water that's it. After the meals done I drink something though.
HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I will only drink after I finished all my food. Even when the food is hot or spicy, I would still not take my drink until I know that I am done with the food. I am not sure whether it does me any good or not but that has been my habit for a very long time.

I have to say I must drink when I eat. I often order a glass of water before I order any food in restaurant. Maybe that is a habit, but I think water will make my stomach feel good and then start to accept food. haha, something like a excise for it.

I like a cup of tea with my meals but any drink will do, meals are too dry otherwise, maybe it's all the salt I out on. Two of my daughters never have a drink with food.

I used to have a glass of water at every meal, but now I only have one if it's a dry or tough meal like ones with bread or meat. I have trouble swallowing, so I need some liquid to get it to go down. But, if I am eating something that is really moist or full of liquid, then I don't need to have water.

ha ha ha... interesting.
Well, I am almost like you, I must have at least a gulp of water down before my meal. Else the food, especially if it is dry, will have a hard time going down. Then Hiccup will occur and it is really a nuisance.
So most of the time, I would prefer to have a drink either before the meal or with the meal. If none is available, I will have to chew longer or eat smaller mouthfuls to avoid having a large chunk of food going down the throat resulting in hiccups. ;)

I think I must be part raccoon, because that is an animal that likes to dunk food in water. We like spicy food, so I keep ice water handy for putting out the fire. It is also true that in general, I like wet food better than dry food. Regular water with a meal makes me full faster, but fizzy water makes me eat more, and that is why I like seltzer water with a restaurant meal.

I never drink when I eat. I always wait until I finish eating before I drink because when you drink you get full faster. My father broke me of the habit of drinking while I'm eating when I was a child. I guess he noticed that I wasn't eating my food because I got full from drinking so he conditioned me not to drink when I eat. That's what I do now so I'm used to it. For me it's a good thing.

Some people use this the other way - they intentionally drink before eating just so that they won't overeat.:P

For me, snackies have to be associated with intermittent sipping but no compulsion while taking meals at home. I drink water, juice or milk after the whole meal is finished. However, there has to be a drink or the other otherwise.

I drink every time I eat. I drink sodas. The only time I will eat something first and then eat shortly after is when I have soft pretzels at Auntie Anne's. After I have the pretzels, I go home and have a soda.

I have never listened to what was healthy or not to eat or drink. If what I like is going to kill me, at least I will be well feed with the food and drink that I really love instead of living and Never eating or drinking what I like.

Looks as though the Wizzy is back..lol. I must have something to drink with food. Actually I drink much more than I eat. Most of my daily calories come from the drinks I drink. I may eat one meal a day, but I am always drinking something.. coffee, coke, water, tea... I guess I am just "weird"...lol.

I have a drink available at all times since my coffee cup is usually within arm's reach. Usually I eat meals without needing anything to drink during the meal unless the food is too spicy or something. In a restaurant they usually serve bread first and if I eat some bread I need something to drink after, that is why I usually have bread with the food not as a separate part of the meal. I do need to have my coffee after the meal though, I guess it is my way of closing the issue and letting my stomach know it can relax.

Hello there. Since young, I've been known as a 'shui tong' aka water bucket. I drink a lot of water. Hence, for me, drinking water while eating is a definite must. I only drink plain water or green tea during my meals. I do not enjoy drinking gassy drinks. Those drinks only make me feel bloated. However, I've heard from some friends that it's not good to drink too much water during meals. This is because the water will dilute the digestive juices in our stomachs and small intestines, making digestion of food less effective. This indeed sounds logical but like you, I cannot stand the 'dryness'. I must drink something when I eat no matter what. =D
