This year I will not be able to be with my family on Thanksgivng. I will be working. I will be cooking for my residents at the retirement home that I work at. I've got alot of work ahead of me, but I hope to make it special for them. We will have a traditional Thanksgiving. Turkey, mashed potatoes, peas & carrots, stuffing, gravy, yams, rolls, black olives, celery sticks with cream cheese, and apple & pumkin pies homemade by me. So what is everyone else planning? And what is on your menu?

I'm always trying to do special things when I can. I would hope when I get older there will still be people around who would want to as well. We all need that little caring touch. Life is just so fast paced these days..

dear irishmist, you know and you must believe, that there will be people there for you when you are elderly, and need the younger persons love, attention and help if you are confined to a residence facility. it's your karma, and God never forgets your kindness to other's in your care. have a great thanksgiving....stanzi

you will find that if you write down everything that you have to prepare and cook nothing will be forgotten, for instance cranberry sauce. I found that when I was cooking professionally if I had a detailed menu in front of me it was much easier, as well I prepared as much stuff ahead of time as possible, for example scrub and prepare yam for oven or microwave, peel potatoes the day or evening before stuff the celery with cream cheese the day before and cover with film and refrigerate, the less you have to do on the day the better the results, it takes a bit of planning but in the end the results will be wonderful, and good on for you for doing this.

dear robinj, this is very helpful advice!! i will also incorporated it when i plan dinner parties in the future. i made the mistake of not preparing ahead for a party i threw, and i was nervous, trying to do everything as guests were arriving, and even after everyone was there!!thanks again for your input, have a great thanksgiving robinj!! stanzi

Planning, preparing, and timing is everything. Boy do I know lol. I do try to get my prep work done the night ahead. Whatever saves me time, because I hate rushing around.

The people who work in retirement homes and nursing homes take on a whole new family, whether they plan to or not. You have a really terrific attitude. I will be with my family, including both of my kids and my three grandkids, for the first time in three years. I am excited. They both have birthdays Thanksgiving week. So do my Brother and Sister. We have lots of celebrating, and we all contribute to the meal. Have a great day, it sure sounds like you have it under control.

Its not really a big day here..I mean I make the whole turkey dinner and whatnot but thats about it..Its just myself, my husband and my two kids every yr since family and friends are all over the place and we cant get together....As for the meal, I'll be making the usual...Turkey, stuffing, corn, biscuts, smashed potatos, gravy and apple pie for dessert..

I hear ya. When everyone is scattered it is hard. This year my kids are close by, but we all have something different going on. Wow what a change from last year. Well life goes on I guess. I will miss spending time with them. Even Christmas plans are not the same this year...

I am going to spend a day with my fiance's family just like last year. They have invited us for it :)
Since I am originally from Japan and have none of my family member lives in USA, I appreciate the fact that I have his family who treats me like their own daughter.
Last year they've asked me to bring a traditional Japanese dish, yes it's strange to mix with turkey dish, mashed potato etc., but I brought something that everybody could eat. It was very fun and made our Thanksgiving as very interesting way than traditional Thanksgiving dinner...lol
I am planning to bring something different this year also. I haven't really decided what I should fix but sure this is exciting!!
It's very heart-warming to know that you are going to work on the day for lots of people's happiness,I believe that you will give people a memorable day :)

I applaud you, for what you will be doing this Thanksgiving is the very essence of Thanksgiving. Kudos to you.
I will be spending my Thanksgiving holiday with my in-laws who fix what I called a Northern meal. Stuffing, some kind of yam balls, mash potatoes and store bought pie.
If I were going to my parents for Thanksgiving we would be having a Southern Thanksgiving meal of cornbread dressing, Mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole, 5 cup cherry salad, and home made pumpkin pie. HMMM. Wish I were going to Arkansas instead of Monterey.
