At my first job, most people are given a raise every year, but the increase depends on your job performance. They evaluate you and then ask you how much percent you would want your increase to be. On my first year, I was often commended for my performance despite my low salary. Then after the evaluation, the big boss asked me how much I wanted my increase to be. Being a rookie, I dreamed big and said I'd like to try for 100% increase (double my current salary). Anyway, I thought, if I didn't get it, at least I tried. But what do you know? The big boss said yes! I was so happy that day. Of course I never got double my pay for the years after that, but I was glad that I asked. My starting salary was pretty low anyway so it felt good to have it doubled after my first year.

Wow..Can you imagine that ..you were surely lucky.. I don't think here in the USA it is a custom for any boss to ask you if you want a raise; let along how much you want a raise for..LOL That is why I broached this question..it is so totally contrary to the way things are done here!

You are so right and I agree with you ..our payrate is much higher then yours is in the Phillipines. I am glad you got that raise..What would you say would be the exchange rate between the USA dollar and your currency?

Yes, I was lucky :) But then, people in the USA definitely have bigger salaries to start with as compared to people in the Philippines. But it was really just a nice feeling to know that you deserved to have your pay doubled... and that the boss thought so too! :)

Oh you would go away laughing because you would think your boss was in a humorous mood and not to be taken seriously? I think I would feel like you in that vein..since most bosses do not come up to you and ask you to name the amount you think you should get a raise for:)

If this happens you never want to cut yourself short. I had a boss that would overpay people just because he thought that if he did not pay them what they thought they were worth he would lose them.
Maybe even find out what other top paid people in your profession and locale are making and start 3 or 4 percent above that.
If that ever happened to me I would probably have been speechless.

Now, I didn't say this was offered to me..I just presented the question to see what kind of answers were given..My boss gave me a lovely raise recently so I will never think to complain:)

It that would happen to us..those would be my thoughts ..exactly..things like that do not happen like that here in America. Usually an employee has to beg for a raise and then if they are lucky the boss may give a few bucks more an hour;)
