Many things can trigger debilitating depression.Feeling of depression are caused by a chemical change that affects how the brain functions.
A normally functioning brain is a giant messaging system that controls everything from your heartbeat,to walking, to your emotions. The brain is made up of billion of nerve cells called neurons. These neurons send and receive messages from the rest of your body, using brain chemicals called neurotransmitters.
These brain chemicals-in varying amounts-are responsible for our emotional state.Depression happens when these chemical messages aren’t delivered correctly between brain cells, disrupting communication.
Think of a cellphone:if your instrument has a weak signal, you may not hear the person on the other end.
Their communication is muted or unclear.
The good news is that there are many forms of treatment that can help you cope with depression, including medications that can strengthen weak signals by raising the levels of certain neurotransmitters, or by improving the neurons’ ability to process signals. This ensures that the brain’s vital messages are delivered—loud and clear.

Hi sanathreddy,
You are correct that neurotransmitters are responsible for heart beating, walking, emotions. Not only for what you have mentioned but also for every action and reaction of the body the neurotransmitters are required. The brain chemicals are not called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are already exists in our body as one of the functioning system in Nervous System. The chemicals are different and they play a major role in activating the neurotransmission. One of the Chemical called Acytile Choline is responsible for activating the neurotransmitters to keep one's mood. A drop in the production of this chemical Acytile Choline risults in drop of mood in a person. This drop in this chemical leads to fear, stress, anxiety and depression. Though the scientists were unable to invent a correct medicine to ensure the production of Acytile Choline, they have invented other medicines which are called Mood elevators or you call anti-depressents, anxiolytic and tranquelisers. Though these medicines do not act directly to improve the levels of Acytile choline, they some how able to improve the mood of a deppressed person. So, doctors are prescribing these mood elevetors for depression.
Remember even now scientists are trying to find out the exact medicine and research is being done continously.

I do know that after I was put on the right medication, it was the difference between night and day for me. I have a chemical un/imbalance. That's what I've been told by my doctor. I can remember before my meds of how I felt and the way I do now. My case...It's remarkable. The meds truly make a person able to handle and cope better than without.
Thanks for posting this... more people need to know this information.

Many things can also help keep depression at bay and it is different for everyone. Finding the right combination of medication and therapy can be a very long and lonely road. The hope is that you find the right combination before this disease takes total control of your life. It's too bad that there isn't a medication or therapy that will remove the stigma of being mentally ill, and yes depression is a mental illness.

I may have to find a treatment for mine. It seems like every other week or even day I get depressive feelings. Almost as if suddenly I'm no longer satisfied with certain things in my life. I often wonder what is wrong with me, but the truth is I've suffered from depression all my life. Now reading this helps me understand more of what it is. All I need now, is to find a way to prevent it from happening to me frequently.

This is a very interesting discussion. Depression is a very complex situation. I am not a scientist. I know that emotions seem to trigger my depression. I also seem to have different levels of depression.

The brain is the most powerful organ that can weaken every single cell in our body. To put ourselves believing and getting depressed with our own problems will bring us big trouble. It pays to have a healthy mind.
Spread the hope! Stay Strong!
