Don't Banks Just Tick You Off??!!

I went online to check my balance in my bank account today, and the 'available balance' was about $300 less than the 'current balance'. I realize this can happen when you have made a purchase that hasn't gone though yet, it just like puts a hold on it. But there wasn't anything pending. So, I called the bank, and was informed that since I have had my account for less than a year, they put a hold on any amount over $500 when I make a deposit at the ATM.
I just about blew a fuse on the girl, because since January, they have never done that before! Uggghhhh!! So, after having been on the phone (mostly on hold) with the girl for nearly 20 minutes, she transferred me to someone in the ATM department, who, in VERY poor English, insisted that I told the other girl I understood. I politely (well, maybe not...) told her that I did not understand, and that I though it was ridiculous, and then she started getting snippy with me (I'm guessing that's what it was, since I could only understand about half of what she was saying), so I asked to talk to someone else.
So, her manager got on the phone, explaining to me that this was their policy, and that it couldn't be changed, and that it was all done by computer. I told him that this has not happened previously, but he insisted that it did. I KNOW when I can get to my money, and when I can't!! I told him I had just written a check that was just a few cents shy of what they said I had available, and that if it was cashed in the next couple of day, I would then have a bounce check fee. Finally, he did release the hold. (Thankfully)
But, really...why does it have to be such a hassle to get to my own money, that I have worked hard for? I've never heard of anything so retarded in my life! (Okay, so maybe I have) Then again, this IS the same bank, in the same state, that put a 7 day hold on a CASHIER'S check from out of state. It was a CASHIER'S check, for Pete's sake! All they had to do was to call the issuing bank to verify it was good. IT WAS A CHECK FROM A BANK!!!
Okay, I'm over it now; I got the money released, and I'm good...
But, really...

Thats really unfortunate that you had to go through that. This is very common at most banks. I joined Scotiabank and then hold any amount over $300 for 5 buisness days. I get around it because my friend works there so she knows me. If I go in and personally deposit it to her or while she is there they let me cash the whole thing. What I think is terrible about the whole situation is that they don't inform their customers about these things.

Banks are the funniest most backwards system that are still allowed to operate today. If you have a lot of money the banks want to give you more money, just because you have a lot of it, and if you have little to no money they charge you. A friend of mine went to the bank and checked his balance. It was -$2. Somehow he owed the bank money? But, he hadn't used the account in 6 months. Also, say you have a balance below the minimum amount, you can't take it out such as you are saying, if you have $10 and the minimum is $25 you can't even get that $10, but it's yours!!! Oh, how I love the American banking system, this is why my banking system is a shoebox under my bed.
