Did you use a bumper pad in your babies crib?

I was told that I shouldn't use a bumper pad in the crib because it could cause the baby to suffocate if she can't roll over. She's eleven months old and she turns over on her own now. I took the bumper pad out of the crib but now I notice that her legs go in between the bars. I'm afraid that she's going to get her leg hurt. Does anyone have any suggestions?

No, that's for little bitty babies, at eleven months old she should be trying to crawl out of the crib! I would go ahead and use them, it may save her at night from getting her legs through the bars while she is sleeping! She is really cute, though!!

I used a bumper pad with both of my kids, and will with the one I have on the way :) I don't really think there's any way they can suffocate with it. We don't suffocate when we have blankets over our faces, they are breathable enough I just can't imagine a child actually suffocating from it. You would have to have the thing taped over their head or something to get it close enough to cover both the mouth and the nose. Our mouth is generally at a bit of an angle from our nose, so logically, something flat, like a bumper pad, would press up against both at the same time causing suffocation. Besides, even if they couldn't roll over, they can turn their heads, even from the earliest age. That is all that would have to happen, if for some reason they could suffocate on it. I've definitely seen my kids and others get their legs stuck when the pad isn't there. I've run in after hearing my son crying and found his leg stuck through there in such a way that he couldn't get it back out on his own. I much prefer to have the bumper there. Besides, now that your daughter is plenty old enough to move anywhere she likes, the bumper pad would be no danger regardless. At least that's my 2 cents.

Congrats on the new baby and thanks for your input. I kind of thought the same thing but since I'm a new mom I figured maybe the person that told me was right and I didn't want to put my child in any kind of harm. Now that I have your statement I feel much more comfortable putting it back on there. Have a great day.

Those are descisions that only you can make really. I know I put my oldest to sleep on his belly when he was about 4 months old, and he's slept that way ever since. (he began sleeping through the night as soon as i did it, as opposed to waking up every 3 hours) I had heard all of the claims of sids, and knew that it was a risk, but every time you put your child in her car seat, you are taking a risk... I must say though, that a bumper in the crib for an eleven month old, may not be a good idea not because she may sufficate, but because she may soon (within the next few months, at least that's when my boys started) be trying to climb out of her crib, and babies figure out they can get higher if they use the bumper for a step.. I have seen mesh bumpers that may work to keep her feet out of the slats, but i don't know how well they work.

Oh yes for all three of my kids who are now ages 11, 8 and 4. I never heard of any child suffocating from one. I felt safer with a bumper pad in the crib because you don't have to worry about them hitting their heads against the crib. The only thing that I have heard of babies suffocating on is stuffed animals and pillows which is why you shouldn't put those in a crib.

I agree with most of the responses that once the child is old enough to move around on their own, that the danger is gone. I have another child on the way and I have been thinking about this also. I am interested to see what the doctors say about it. My son got his leg stuck in between the bars when I would be doing laudry and I would take it out, so I can't imagine not having one in there at all. I will have to do some research on this and ask some other people. You know... the supposed "experts". HA HA HA

Apparently they don't recommend bumper pads because of air flow. They believe it could be associated with SIDS. At 11mths I wouldn't worry so much anymore.

No, I didnt use one at all, but I never had any problems,. the only thing that I can think of is a stopper that you use on beds, they are netted so the feet cannot go through..

I think the suffocation risk is for younger babies who can't move very well. At 11 months, she is able to use blankets since she would be able to pull them off of her face on her own. Since you took it out already, just keep an eye on her and see what happens. My son has put his leg between the bars a couple of times but has never gotten stuck.

I used a bumper pad with both of my kids. It never casued any problems for me. I did take them out when they started rolling over by themselves though.
