Weight loss goals

I have realized that I have acquired more weight than I originally assumed. Where I thought I may have gained up to 10 pounds, it appears (by a friend's scale!) that I have gained 18! Now I knew my pants were fitting poorly, but didn't think I had put on too much weight. I am now considered obese, as opposed to overweight and I think it is terrible.
In order to lose the weight to keep it off, I am setting a goal of 1.5 pounds per week until I achieve a 10 percent body minimization! For example, 150 pound woman losing 15 lbs.
Do you think this is an attainable and reasonable goal? What ideas can you share for weight loss?
