Bringing my class discussion to myLot....

I am a mylotter ... since last week. But I am first and foremost a teacher. I just thought of of sharing myLot to my college students by posting some of my intriguing questions/discussions in class. I thought of teaching my students on online earning. And i thought of myLot as a best place to start off. We have our own course management online system but of course don't get paid with any of our submissions. I thought of maximizing my students efforts at the same time inspiring then to share their thoughts and works.
In my experience, generally I find my students too shy for oral participation or graded recitation in class, which results in zero grade for class participation. But I come across some of their blogs or when they submit write ups, some of them just naturally write well.
Yes some of them may be lazy or are not gifted with active brain cells. And even if they fail my class, I don't want them to end up like society's millstone just because they don't earn for themselves or perhaps don't know how to start it.
So to all my friends, in the next, few days, I'll be posting some discussion with a heading like : CS 215, IT 111 or CS 319 etc.. This means discussion for my class but you're welcome to post some response. I find this bothersome, please just ignore. But please please don't "notify off" me on your friends' list.
Hope myLot approves. The guidelines simply say any discussions under the sun. I have my class under the sun :-) LOL Thank you guys!!!!

I just hope during the days when I was still teaching, MyLot would have had emerged then, and someone would have had invited me before hand. I would also do the same thing as what you had planned it: bringing the discussions online. Noble your plans are sis! Me, I had my class under the "blazing" coldness of our rooms and laboratory... Kidding. Have a great day ahead of you, sis!

there's far greater noble reason for this... and you know what i mean. i'm trying to reach 500 posts ASAP so that i'll the right to copy and paste text for my discussions. Because almost every night i write my discussions for next day on msword so that i won't forget but i have to re-type it since i can't yet copy and paste :-) how about racing to 500 ha :-) LOL

I know what you meant sis... And I have beem rushing to reach 500+ too. And you know what? I did write articles at home for my MyLot discussions only to find out that I will have to have 500+ points for me to be allowed to copy-paste! Hahahahaha! Great day/night ahead, my sister!

I have also thought about this when I was still starting here, since I don't have much idea on what subjects or topics to discuss. So I would ask my friends (not students), on what discussions they think would be fun to post here. Some of them have given me ideas, but most of them didn't pass after taking careful considerations since mylot is an international site with lots of members all over the world.
But that's a good idea, two brains are better than!;)

Its a brilliant idea..Indeed,Last year..my English teacher had this kind of idea too but not using Mylot. My teacher held a website that allows the students to share and posts discussions and students are to comments about it.Too bad,its does not work.Only at the start, but then it stop halfway.Maybe its not as cool as Mylot..hehe!
I think you may use Mylot and get your students too,to join Mylot community and as they goes along they will be able to improve their english and also have their opinions here.Study based Internet is one of the latest technology..its the Online learning. Its good to have you as a teacher start this activity and who knows, other educator around the world may use this too as a form of teaching.
Other than that, your students can can get earning here, refers your students as your referrals and as many as you can get..this will help you earn more. You'll earn while teaching on both way!

my co-teachers advised to set up my own blog for my class then they can post and respond to discussion from there. But the sad thing is, its only me who earns for their effort. And i don't think i can get much participation with that one. So i decided to have it here where me and my students earn. Just this to my head, Online Learning with Online Earning. pretty coll ha !

I am one of Ma'am Ebony's students and I think this is an excellent idea. Some of us are too shy and too sleepy in class to participate in the discussions. This might just solve the problem. Writing is better (in this case, typing) because just like any written reports or homeworks, we are able to express more freely without being conscious with our answers. And we don't have to answer right in Ma'am Ebony's face. :) It also helps because now I kinda study at home. ",

:-) i hope they'll be able to impress you. you're always welcome to add comments. I 'm a college teacher for computer science. i'll be handling theory of programming languages this semester, which mainly focus on studying the underlying concepts of different programming paradigms, their commonalities as well as their differences. What i really intend is that for students to grasp a better understanding of this so that they won't have problem shifting from one programming language to another :-)

Hello. Your idea of asking your students to write instead of them participating orally is really great. :) Though, some may never be that good as a writer, you can extract creative ideas from their writings. I really like professors who have innovative way of getting student participation. I will surely read more about your stuff. :) Goodluck then. :)

Most of cut class because they go to internet cafes where they online RPG or chat or busy with friendster. i want to go with what they do best... at the same time get them to participate in my class. Thank you myLot.
