Since my HS bestfriend gave me a copy of Josh Groban's Awake album a couple of weeks back (right after Groban's concert here in Manila), I've been listening to his songs over and over and over again. If my iPod can complain, it would have already. Even my media player probably wants a reprieve from the tenor's voice.
What I like about Groban's new album is that it's a welcome break from his operatic-type songs. Awake sounds a bit pop-pish but Groban's voice is, as always, clean, beautiful and invokes feelings from his listeners. Whether heartbreaking, joyous or poignant, he hits the right note and the right chord with perfect timing. Although I know no single line of Italian in the songs in his album, it is as if, I understand every word because of his melodious voice. I admit that whenever I listen to the Italian and Spanish verses, I had to summon the god of Google to translate the words.
Among my favorites are Awake, February Song, So She Dances and Solo Por Ti. I can't really exactly say why they're my favorites. I guess you'd have to hear for yourself.
What I like about So She Dances though, is that it's filled with imagery. When you're listening to Groban sing the lines, you can just "see" the song come to life with all the cast, characters, lighting, and scene. It's about this man watching his lady love dance in and out of a crowded room. The sonhg ends with the man finally finding the courage to walk up to the lady for a dance. It's a song straight from a fairy tale.
So there, if your ear is itching to hear a new sound, you might want to try Josh Groban's Awake album. Let me know how it goes. :)
