Tube TV might has more chance because of the radiation. And white is the stronger wave after blue one. LCD and TFT had the minim risk.
Now the looking too near part, the retina will be damaged by the each heavy stroke of changing focus (eyes accommodation) that is too fast. Imagine how fast is the changing arousal of the eye subject when looking too near. The brain is working heavily with the nerve who had giving signal to the eyes.
For each text, it's tolerable from 10 to 15 cm.
For picture frame, it's tolerable from 5 to 7 times of the TV sizes (the diagonal).
That's why when we are using PC, you can stay a bit near while reading text, but it's advisable when you are watching movie to be stepped back a bit.
Now it depends on what you are focusing.

Hello..
I think we are not getting blind if sitting too close with television but we will get short-sighted. I am telling you the truth because I am wearing spectacle now cause by it.
The reason is our eyes can not accept the light too fast and straight to. It will make our lens damage!
HAPPY LUCKY.

i've being thinking of the same thing but one day, a science student in my university described vividly how sitting close to tv can be harmful to us. i realised that it's true but i can't describe scenario 'cause i'm not a science student and can't remember the terms and the effects to the eyes.
it's just not a tale but the truth.
