I actaully work for an American cell phone provider and we are moving further forward into the G3 networking and have recently released CDMA to replace part of our GSM network in key cities the best part is that most of our consumer have not noticed and probably will not notice our conversion to the G3 networks because the changes are so trivial on the consumer side.
The difference between G2 (GSM) and G3 (MNTS) networking is a simple play on the frequicies. In North America all ceel phones operate on two frequincies 1900Mhz which is the largest group and 900 Mhz. The G3 networking that is now becoming availible will have tentatively more frequencies 1800-2200mhz and 700-900Mhz which will mean that there will be less strain on the bandwidths and allow a smoother flow of calls through. This change will first and formost allow for phones to travel more readily and proficiently into other areas of the world because this change was aimed at encompassing most of the current cell phone frequencies around the world. Second of all with less bandwidth strain service providers will be able to add more internet capabilities and faster internet to there phones (yes the web on a phone could go first they are restrained by the companies to help insure that calls and text get the first priority). The final piece is that the cellular networks are being converted over to voIP (Voice Over IP) systems which would mean that your call is really being routed through secure internet connections in bases from the tower. This can only mean good things for cell phone customers but the changes will not be obvious as some of the former changes in the industry.

GSM:we can cover more no of user, using reuse of freq spectrum
CDMA:but we can cover here also but some disturbance(mens of noise)
this is one reason.

cdma can cover more users with the same amount of spectrum ,with much better signal quality...cdma is more spectrally efficient..

cdma is the latest and best technology but it is less popular as some royalty should be paid for using it to the company who invented that technology.
gsm even though older, is easier to setup and is not having royalty payment. hence many provide gsm and is more popular.

GSM is good and it has its own advantage. but i still it is slower than cdma technology. with next gen gsm, i hope the data transfer will be done at high speed :).
