SEAGATE hard-drives, made in Thailand, are having trojan horse software pre-loaded, possibly in a spy effort by the Chinese government. The Taiwanese Investigation Bureau claims that the Maxtor Basics 500G discs, which are used by government agencies, have been found to contain Trojan horse viruses that automatically upload to Beijing websites. So far more than 1,800 of the portable Maxtor hard discs, carried two Trojan horse viruses: autorun.inf and ghost.pif.The sites that the hard-drives call up and upload their data to are www.nice8.org and www.we168.org. The attack is unusual, which leads the TIB to think that the Chinese government is involved. Recently, the Chinese government has run an aggressive interweb spying programme in Taiwan. The bureau has ordered the product's Taiwanese distributor, Xander International, to take the hard-drives from the shelves. Xander told the Chinese-language Liberty Times that the company had sold 1,800 tainted discs to stores last month.Seagate's Asian Pacific branch said it was investigating.

That just doesn't make sense. New hard drives aren't even formatted. You need to have a file system in place before you can place viruses on a hard drive. Even so, the first thing I do with any new hard drive is to format it which would wipe out any and all content that was on their before. Either way, the simplest way to deal with this is to ALWAYS format any new hard drive before using it.

If that is true that will be serious problem. Is there any website link about this accusation? As far as I know if you buy a new hard drive you will have to format it before you can use, how come there is a trojan in the hard drive if they bought it brand new (brand new hard drive need to be formatted before use)? ^^

Hi retrotulip. Thanks for your informative post. Spying activity of course is a must, actually, for any country but the only different is the modes-operandi. Unfortunately those given both links are not working very well. I don't know why!!! For nice8 - server problem. For we168 - I received this message, "Directory Listing Denied This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed." Thanks.
