i am in pain, major pain. my dr told me i have knees of a 70 year old (due to an accident) (i am 46). I know that some of you have had similar experiences (maybe not with your knees, but perhaps your back) but my question is how do you cope with the pain and still live a normal life? i have 2 part time jobs (one outside and one inside the house) kids, a house, a hubby to look after (they do help a lot. my hubby makes all the meals for instance.)
but how do you cope? do you have any suggestions for me?
thanks in advance!

I feel very sorry for your situation. I watched Discovery Channel one time, it introduced that acupuncture could relieve chronic pain and a lot of people suffer from the pain like you are trying this alternative method, some of them get better. If you have an open mind and Acupuncuture is available in your place, I suggest you can have a try. Good luck!

I have used both acupuncture and acupressure for chronic pain... they are quite effective in reducing the pain, and increasing your ability to deal with the pain through relaxation and reduction of anxiety. But I have now had to add medication because of deterioration of my condition.

Hi Sweets,
As you know I have big time pain issues..I have had a big reduction in pain since taking Nutra Feron and vitalizer vits..
First thing to get in your head is rearrange you idea of 'Normal Life'..
What your life was like prior to this pain will never be your life again..
You must reinvent your life and stop chasing the normal life of yesterday..
Normal to you will never be normal to me or your next door neighbor..
Pain is an evil thing coming into you home to steal your body and mind and pull it away from the ones you love..Do not let him win..Pray,mediate,relax,take pain meds, do what you can to help yourself stay ahead of the pain..
Try to do more money earning things at home so you are not stressed and chasing around..2 part times..sounds like you are not getting enough hours to pick up overtime but just struggling..Maybe you can spend more time in your home biz and have it pay off in the end..
Just do not suffer if there is a way not to..

I am so sorry you have to deal with this level of pain. Pain at any level is rough on the body, but when it is this level of severe pain, it really does take its toll.
I live with fibromyalgia --fatigue, bad pain, migraines, etc. For me the fatigue is the worst, but the pain runs a real close second. I try to rest whenever I feel tired. Additionally, when I am in a lot of pain, I will soak in a bathtub full of really hot water. I get the water so hot that most people wouldn't be able to tolerate it. I put either a really good bath gel/bubble bath in it or epsom salts. The heat does give me some relief. Usually enough that I can do a few things around the house in the afternoon.
You might try the hot water soaks. I also have found some relief from water exercise and water walking. Also, will your doctor prescribe any type of pain med for the pain? I have learned that very, very few will due to fear of addiction. This really does bother me...would they rather us be in severe pain and not really be able to live a full life.
Hope this helps just a little!

You can apply heat (such as hot moist packs) to your knees for 20 minutes, several times per day. If you're overweight you need to lose weight in order to reduce the load on your knees. Exercising in a swimming pool would be good because the water reduces the effect of gravity on your knees.

I'm so sorry you have that pain to deal with. I consider myself very lucky at 60 not to have ever had those problems although I have smaller ones that I have to live with and for me ice is the only thing that helps. I've asked doctors which is best cold or heat and I've been told it's whatever works for each person. My mother on the other hand only uses heat and swears by it. How do I cope with the pain? I take a lot of psych meds..lol...and I truly believe those are what get me through the bad times.

What I have learned during my 11 years with fibromyalgia is to learn how to pace yourself. Know your limitations and live within them. Don't push yourself too hard. If you have something big coming up that you have to attend, prepare for it by getting rest before. You have to learn how to cope and manage your illness; don't let it manage you. Don't let it.
I take Tylenol 3's for pain. I used to take 6-8 pills a day. I now only take 2 or 3. I attribute that to losing weight through exercise (walking) as well as a magnesium/malic acid supplement which reduces pain. You might want to try that.

Do you take an NSAID? That kind of long-lasting relief may be helpful. I used to use store-brand naproxin sodium from Wal-Mart.
I am in chronic pain from: having my right leg amputated and re-attached, requiring 6 surgeries and leaving me with adhesions and nerve damage.
From a c5-c6 fusion in my neck.
From breaking my left wrist... 2 surgeries, bad result: nerve damage.
From 3 damaged discs in my lower spine, affecting my left hip, leg and foot, as well as the back itself.
From plantar fasciitis I work daily to keep under control.
From deterioration of my spine at the mid-point of my back.
I also had migraines, but have thankfully cured those!
I have recently begun using tramadol for pain, after having the steroid injections in my spine. If I do one every six hours with an Ibuprofen, it really helps without making me feel dopey. The Vics and Percs make me sick, so they weren't an option, and they don't work very well anyway.
I have also split up my sleep times to two sessions of three hours each... any more than that and I get very sore and stiff. I usually sleep at 3 a.m. and 3 p.m.
I eat light meals and try to move around as much as possible. Sitting is another enemy.
I listen to music a lot, and come here to be with good friends... these keep my attitude adjusted in the proper way! I couldn't survive without them!
I know with your lifestyle most of these things are not possible for you. But the thing about living with pain is that you DO find ways to cope! I have been dealing with these problems for over 25 years, and I'm still going! Be hopeful!!

Chronic pain is bad...I'm only 17 and I busted the lower back muscles either side of my spine, that obviously wrote most sports right off..have to be seriously careful with the positioning I do in the gym or in workouts too. You should always do things which your knees are comfortable with, and always try to make them comfortable, I have often had to wear back support type things because of my posture. Yes there is also posture, but I guess that again comes into making your self as comfortable as possible at all times.
