Coffee! Coffee! Coffee! Java!

I recently decided to stop drinking coffee. I have an adverse reaction to caffeine... like I told a friend in another discussion, if I have even one cup of coffee and call my daughter for something, a few seconds into the conversation she will demand "Have you been drinking coffee?" I don't even do well with decaf. On the show 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' (one of my favorite shows for awhile), Larry David is lamenting that if he drinks coffee after a certain time in the morning then he will be awake all night. His friend suggests decaf. He replies that decaf keeps him awake 'til 2 (something like that anyway). And that is true with me too. I am so sensitive to caffeine that even the lesser amount in decaf still wires me. Plus, I do not drink my coffee black. I drink it with plenty of cream to cut the acid, and plenty of sugar because I like sweet. So then I've got a sugar rush, a caffeine buzz, and an overload of saturated fat. But man, a cold wintry morning without a steamy mug o' java? On second thought, I think I'll wait 'til summer to give it up. Summer is a good time to quit drinking coffee. I'll close this missive with a list of my favorite coffee quotes: Yes, I've heard of "decaf." What's your point? Only Irish coffee provides in a single glass all four essential food groups: alcohol, caffeine, sugar, and fat. - Alex Levine To drink is human, to drink coffee is divine! Espresso - just our little way of free-basing coffee. Everybody should believe something. I believe I'll have more coffee. Nancy Astor (to Winston Churchill): "Sir, if I were your wife, I would put poison in your coffee." Winston Churchill (in reply): "Madam, if I were your husband, I would drink it."

black coffee is good if taken without any sugar or cream. it's good for removing toxics from your body. since you're a coffee addict like me, i suggest you take non caffeine coffee or those that considered alternative medicine. Me, i'm taking DXN coffee everyday around 2-3 cups. Love the smell of coffee...

I have always wanted to drink black coffee, but I just can't stomach it! My stomach literally starts gurgling and churning and gets upset. I have switched to decaf already, but what is DXN coffee?

I only have one cup of coffee a day, and that is with my breakfast as no way am I going to do without my coffee/caffeine fix LOL I can't tolerate too much caffeine either, which is why only the one cup. One, it makes me, uh, shall we say void a lot? And two, I do have an anxiety problem and ever since I did cut down on anything with too much caffeine (and that means teas, chocolate, and never drink soda) I don't have too much anxiety Aww..why give up coffee in the summer. You can always have Iced Coffee. LOL I love those sayings especially Churchill's Did he REALLY say that. To look at photos of him he looked like such a straight forward kind of sour face (can't post the word I'd like to say)

Are you trying to be a bad influence on me? I had forgotten about iced coffee in the summer! Thanks a lot! I don't drink soda either, but I do have to have my daily chocolate fix. I get these gourmet dark chocolate mini-chips and eat some of those with a couple of nuts in each mouthful, it makes me feel like I'm making a much healthier choice. I also drink a lot of tea, and herbal tea just doesn't do it for me, although I keep trying. I don't know if he really said it or not... I wasn't there to vouch.

I actually don't mind herbal teas..Love a lot of the Celestial Seasonings one, and have my mint tea while lying in bed reading before I go to bed. I think it's the mint tea that zonks me out..LOL..But hey it's in the same "family" of herbs as catnip

Well, as far as herbal teas go, catnip is my favorite. I share the plants in the back yard with my cats. One big happy family!

Hello my dear zigzag buddha. I also love to drink coffee especially when I feel tired and sleepy, but not in the evening because I don't want to keep myself awake at night during sleeping hours. I am so sorry to hear that you have an adverse reaction to caffeine, because of which you have decided to stop drinking it. I once read from some magazine that drinking coffee is not so good to our health as it has some side effects to our body. As to the exact side effect, I have forgotten about it.

Sir William! We meet again! Too bad we couldn't sit in the garden chatting over a cup of kafei. No I can't drink it anywhere near to the time when I would go to bed! And it's all probably just talk on my part... I will probably never stop drinking it till the day I die, and then I will drink it some more in the 'afterlife'!

My parents were crazed coffee addicts who wouldn't have known a nice cup of Arabic if it bit their behinds. They bought some cheap Robustica blend and boiled the grounds in an enamel saucepan. It smelled so bad, I still got nauseated every time I even smelled coffee--even "good" coffee for decades after I was out on my own. I thank my lucky stars I married a swell guy who can live without the stuff. I do like a splash of iced coffee, a scoop of French vanilla ice cream, and a drizzle of dark chocolate in a glass of milk as a nightcap from time to time, though. To make that we keep a bottle of Victorian House liquid coffee concentrate in the fridge. It is 100% Arabica which tastes and smells wonderful and has less caffeine than the kind most people in the US drink. Nancy Astor was quite a wit, and I should like to know who really had the last word in that exchange. I fear the historians have doctored it a bit. She also said, "I married beneath me - all women do," but not to Churchill, lol.

Glad to have found another woman who reads between the lines! Nancy Astor was a poor girl from Virginia who moved to England and became the first woman to have served in the British Parliament and the wife of the second Viscount of Astor of Hever Castle, where Ann Bolyen and Henry VIII and other notables lived: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hever_Castle

Hahaha! Reminds me of my run in with scotch whiskey! If I had been in your shoes I would have been put off coffee for life myself! Boiled coffee grounds in a saucepan would be enough to put anybody off coffee! Your nightcap sounds HEAVENLY! I don't know who Nancy Astor was, but I doubt that a woman who said, "I married beneath me - all women do" would have let Churchill's purported retort go 'un-retorted'! In fact I would bet against it.

Man, I never knew this comment was sitting here! This is actually a pretty frequent occurrence - not getting email notification of comments being posted to my discussions. But nevertheless, hehehe! Right now I'm a 'poor' girl living in Virginia, and I believe there is a castle in my future as well! So I have that in common with her as well as the 'habit' of usually having the last word!

Hi Zig, lol Im on my third mug this morning! Which holds 2 cups instead of just one....lol I love coffee, and I feel like crap if I dont get to have any in the morning. Like you I love it ladden with cream and sugar. Mmmm what a great combination! Im a Starbucks finatic. I only like drinking the House or Breakfast Blend from them. I have tried just about all of them and have other likes, but nothing I could drink on a daily basis. A friend introuduced me to Starbucks about 7 years ago, and I have not been able to drink anything since. The taste is spectacular! I liked your quotes....lol good ones! Bay Lay Gray xx

Hahaha! Yeah, ALL my mugs hold at least 2 cups, otherwise I would be bouncing back and forth from the kitchen for refills non-stop! I don't actually think I've ever had any Starbucks coffee, other than the beans my brother gets. I don't often buy a cup of coffee, I prefer to make my own from freshly ground beans. Yeah, I liked those quotes too. I think my favorite one is "Everybody should believe something. I believe I'll have another cup of coffee." I think that's exactly what I'm going to do right now!

I really like that last call. For myself I don't drink coffee, it turns my tummy just to smell. Once though, a friend had some flavoured instant coffee of some sort, it was really yummy smelling and I had some of that, I needed to use the bathroom for a long time afterward. SO no coffee for me. Cheers.

I've only been drinking tea these days - still has caffeine but for some reason I do not have as bad a reaction to it as with coffee, unless I drink it in the afternoon, then I'm awake till the next day, even if my body is begging for sleep my mind is racing a million miles an hour. If I do drink coffee though I have to drink it after I've eaten something substantial or I end up in the same condition you were describing. I had to get up early one morning (and I am NOT an early riser) so I downed a cup of coffee to maybe jolt me into awake mode. Man that sh!t hit my stomach and doubled me over with cramps... I spent the rest of the day making trips to the john every couple of minutes.

How fortunate you are! I also love the aroma of it, both when I'm grinding the beans and as it brews, and nothing will get me out of bed faster than to smell it wafting on the air with my sleepy nose... if I per chance have a house guest who rises earlier than myself!

While I am here I thought I'd add my comments about coffee because I recently gave it up as well and it was a little tough for the first week or so. I think many of us associate certain beverages with that warm fuzzy feeling we get when we drink them. For me my favorite morning activity was to brew a fresh cup of coffee and add flavored coffee creamer. Then I'd wander into the great room, turn on the television and sit with David while we decided what to eat for breakfast. All the cats would gather around and we'd have a family moment. In the summer I'd wander outside on the deck and have my coffee and commune with nature. When I gave the coffee up I realized I could still savor the moments...but now I do it with a cup of steaming green or Chinese tears. Not quite the same flavor...but the moments are precious with or without my Java! Cheers to you whatever you are drinking these days... Raia

Hehehehe... yeah, I guess steaming Chinese tears wouldn't have the same flavor as a cuppa java! I wouldn't think American tears would either! A little too salty for my tastes! I'm drinking Earl Gray these days or English Breakfast. Still more caffeine than I need but oh well.
