How is it like in NY?

I always dreamed of travelling to New York. I don't know why it is so difficult for me to do that. A bit the loooong distance, the ticket price, the hotel prices..Well, I guess someday I might go. If I could, I would choose to go on Christmas time. I suppose it is the most amazing city in the world at that time.But then I am thinking if I travel that far, shouldn't I spend more time to have the chance to see other states? California, Washington, Las Vegas, Miami Florida? Or is New York enough for one visit? Tell me all you.. New Yorkers, how is it like living there?
