Baby Hiccups

My two week old little boy seems to get hiccups all the time. I know its normal but he gets so frustrated and fussy when he gets them. I feel so helpless because I don't know what I can do for him. Most of the time I just try to hold him and love on him until they go away. Anyone else know the best way to relieve the hiccups or something to do to make him more comfortable when he has hiccups?

This mom of 6 has dealt with lots of baby hiccups. There's no for sure way to get rid of them but there are a few things you can try. You an try to get him to nurse or take a bottle, sometimes drinking and swallowing will cure them. You can try to get him to take a pacifier, the sucking reflex might help. You can try to get him to burp, this might "release" the hiccups. I know of two other ways that would be a bit controversial to use on a 2 week old baby but they really do work. One would be to blow hard right in his face, not for long just a quickhuff. The other would be to open the freezer while holding the baby. Do it quickly so the cold air "rushes" out. Both work the same way by making the baby inhale suddenly. Like I said maybe not good ideas for such a little baby but they do work quite often and at least you'll know.

You're very welcome! The last two are definitely more for older babies and kids who will think it's kind of funny...a 2 week old would probably be scared! But you'll have plenty of hiccups to deal with in the coming months and years!

Thanks so much. You got a lot of really great ideas. I will definitely have to try them. I may not use the last two now but they will come in use when he is older.

I was going to suggest blowing in his face. It makes him have to catch his breath and might get rid of the hicups. It has worked on my kids. I did this to them when they were little. Good Luck!

Usually my son falls asleep after he gets the hiccups too. It just makes me sad that he gets so frustrated with them.

Yes, like everyone said.... it's normal! I use to feel hopeless as well. what I use to do is sing and play with my daughter, just get her distracted and most of the time, they past. Another thing is to hold her upright and just pat her back. There's just trapped air, so it just needs to be released. You can try giving her a bit of water, but it's just as good as what you're doing now.... no need to worry, you're doing great! CJR

Thanks for the response. Next time I will try to keep him as distracted as possible. Maybe that will help him.

There is not much you can do except what your already doing just trying to make him feel better. It seemed to happen alot with one of my babies. It is frustrating but they will go away and as he gets older it will happen less and less.

I am a three years old mom. Sometimes when my child has hiccup, that means to say he has to go to the toilet. I know it may sound strange, but it is true.
